I did the Pirelli Sottozeros in 285/30/20 rear and 255/35/20 front. Love them as they are the most aggressive winter tire we can run. Cold weather driving is again enjoyable and as safe as can be.

Thanks! That is the way I will go. Although, it looks like we may not be able to get the car from the other dealer, so I may be back to plan A and putting an order in and waiting.

Wish I saw this thread earlier...

Went to test fit the fronts:

Style 351 8.5x19" Wheel from the F10 550 Msport...

Had to use a 20mm spacer and it rubs, would probably need to grind down about 1-3mm - not doing that.

Then tried

Style 163 (CSL) - Reps - 9x19

I could get away with using a 10-15mm spacer, and the paint would need to be sanded down, off the caliper in 3 small sections. Doesn't clear it by 1mm - not doing that.

Test fitted a BC Forged 19" 3pc wheel, didn't even mount to the hub, lacks about 10mm clearance.

I'm going to test fit a 345 Replica wheel tomorrow (8.5x19 & 9.5x19) Will keep you guys posted.

Is it at all practical to mount winter tires onto the stock 20" wheel? Saw some talk about that but always though it was nonsensical to break down the tires twice a year. Also, wouldn't the 20" wheel be WAY too wide to be effective? Last, how would this impact my wheel/tire insurance....Say I hit a pothole and blow out the sidewall of the winter tire, and bend the wheel. Will BMW say "hey, you didn't have the stock tires on the car; NOT COVERED!" Any thoughts? Thanks.

Best wheels to get are the Beyern Spartan wheels that are rotary forged for the price they are good wheels under $400 a wheel.

If anyone is interested I am going to be selling my OEM 19" M5 wheels and Sottozero II tyres soon as I have parked the M5 for the rest of the winter due to buying a second vehicle for work, etc. The wheels are the OEM wheels that the F10 M5 comes standard with, not the 19" winter wheel. The wheels are perfect and have the OEM TPMS sensors already installed. The Pirellis are also in excellent shape having been used for about 6,000 miles in total. I'll be measuring tread depth this evening.
PM me if interested.

I wish I've read this post before, at least before buying a set of 255/40-19 winter tires. The plan was to mount them on 19" OZ Racing Ultraleggera coming off the M3. No luck, the rear calliper scratches the bell of the wheel. Not really keen on filing the calliper off so still looking for a winter solution.

Tire Rack recommends 255/35-20 square setup with 20" wheels. Has anyone tried this setup? How does it work. Is the rear wheel not too wide for a 255mm tire?

I am dismounting the 1/2 worn out Sottozeros from my winter tyre/wheel package this week and then will have the set of 19" OEM BMW M5 wheels for sale if anyone is interested. PM me for further info but these are the perfect wheel for winter/track, AND they look great on the car.

I just took delivery of a 14 M5, and it has been raining like crazy and the Super Sport has like 10% of the traction.

I have a set of 20" Style 356 from my previous F10, will it fit has the clearance for the M5 with some winter or All Season Conti DWS?

Hard to say. You will need a test fit (front & rear) to confirm. The M5 brakes caliper housings are a big pain for clearance.

I tried them, doesn't fit. However, I just picked up a set of Style 303's and they fit fine, going to use them as my winter setup.

I bought the BMW OEM winter tire set up and am getting them installed today. They only came in silver and since my normal 408 are black I fear I am going to miss the black look. Is there an easy way to paint these or powder coat these to black? Is this recommended or will they still scratch easily? Are the base black 408s bmw sells powder coated as well with the only difference that the dealer does it? Thanks

You might find you like the change of pace for a bit. I have the stock CP rims for winter and HREs with a charcoal finish for the summer. I enjoy switching back and forth.

Agree. Change is good. I have 21" HRE P101s in satin bronze and the silver 408m in the winter is a nice change!

I was thinking of using my 19' M5 rims (345) as winter setup but can't find run flats that will fit this size: 265/40 and 295/35. Any suggestions ? I really wish to stick with my current rims.

Thanks

I suggest you get a set of quality dedicated winter tires - in other words, no run flats.

You can get Pirelli Sottozero IIs in the OEM 19" sizing for these rims. Work very well.

I am not keen on this solution. Don't feel comfortable driving a vehicle without spare wheel and with no run flats. In case of flat tyre I'm doomed and have to call for some sort of assistance. I don't care much about driving in the city this way but on the highway it can get tricky...

They are not run flats and you wouldn't want them to be.
