DIY Removable Front Plate

Guys,

As a Chicagoan I'm been fighting the front plate ticket for many years... Below is the solution that I created in order to have a plate displayed while parked on the public streets and removed the rest of the time. I bought all the pieces from Home Depot for under $10.

Materials
Felt Tape
Suction Cups - 54402 Home Depot
Razor Blade to cut tape

Back of the plate with suction cups and felt tape

Close up of Front Plate

Front Plate with Suction Cups

I've even left the plate on while driving down the highway over 60 miles and it stayed on.

Do you guys actually get tickets while parked for no front plate? Ive been pulled over, but in other states so they dont do anything. Id be scared to leave that on the highway i think.

In Chicago it's a $50 fine and the parking enforcement is ran by a private company so you'll get a ticket every time they catch you.

Great idea to deal with meter maid tickets while parked. I will do this today and keep in trunk.

I just keep it in the glove box so it is easy to pull out and put away.

So what happens while you are parked and somebody swipes (steals) your front license plate since it is so easy to just take it off?

I've used the suction cup front plate for the past few years in chicago and haven't had my front plate stolen. But If it gets stolen I'd just order another plate from the DMV. Cheaper to replace it then get tickets.

Why would someone want to steal your license plate? It has no value.

I guess you live in a part of the U.S. with very little crime. Even the movies or tv show crimes being committed with stolen getaway cars and stolen license plates. It would be one stupid criminal to use his/her own car or his/her own license plate -- it is akin to a criminal leaving his calling card for the crime he/she just committed.

If you park in San Francisco you will get one, park anywhere else im aware of out here and no one cares. Only the most liberal city on the planet will give you a ticket for no front plate....but not for public nudity etc.

I just tried out my new suction cup plate while parked in a metered spot in rainy pdx. It wouldn't stick!!!! Kept falling off. After a couple attempts people were looking at me like I was a thief. Is there a trick to get it to stick? It worked in my dry warm garage at home.

I primarily use the top two suction cups and I clean the surface with my hand before sticking the plate on the bumper. If you still are having issues try licking the suction cups before applying.

I also sent you a pm with my contact details.

I recently did as well. 2 tips. 1. void ant metered spot in PDX. 2. Use the OEM front bumper plate mount to attach your suction cups.

Attaching the suction cups to the pate itself doesn't work well.

Rho-Plate (google it) works off the tow hook and is pretty easy if want something a little more sturdy without modifying the front of your car.
