As a thank you to everyone (incl B1.Pilot & Eleven11) who helped me get the part number, I took photos along the way during my install, and threw together a DIY/tutorial to upgrade from pre-LCI cup holder to LCI cup holder.
LCI Cup Holder P/N: 51169277262 Purchase Link: http://www.ecstuning.com/Search/SiteSearch/51169277262/ Do-It-Yourself Link: http://avlnch.com/aaron/m5post/diy-ch/ Advice: Take your time and move slow, or else it's easy to damage something in the car while working with tools. The whole install is fairly easy and might take around 10-15 minutes. Edit/Notice My M5 is a 2013, and this install will be exactly as explained for all 2013 m/y's. Members have attempted this on 2012 m/y and have determined that the amount of space behind cup holder is different from a 2013. Fitting the LCI cup holder on a 2012 requires more work (permanent modification). Read thread for more details.

Very clean and detailed writeup. Awesome job!
Every time I see your interior I'm in awe. Will do ED this summer and will go Full Amaro Brown with Piano Black. Might punt on the contrasting white stitching due to the rumors of excessive cost. Haven't got a quote from Individual yet. Waiting to find out whether I can get a '15 model before the end of August when I need to be back in the US. |

Thanks for sharing! I would suggest lightly wrapping the DCT selector knob with masking tape, if you want to be ultra-safe. I didn't notice any scuffs, but the sides did contact the trim piece as I was lifting it out.

@m5hadoop congrats on your new individual M5. AB is a great choice. The contrast stitching is a lot. They should of tooled up production like the M6 (contrast stitching is standard). I would however recommend getting the back of the front seats black. Makes a huge difference. Also make sure you have Z1XX (individual full leather) on your spec sheet.
@eleven11 I was able to avoid scraping the DCT selector by putting it in neutral and s/d position while lifting the center console trim piece up and out. I also took my time and moved around in slow motion. But if your not careful like that, probably a good idea to tape off the DCT and maybe even the trim around you. @py0413 yeah it really is. you would think the test drivers who put a ton of mileage on the test mules would say something like "zee flappy plastic crap must change dis now". Atleast they got the message before LCI.

This didn't work for me. Got everything out, switched cup holders, went to place back in. The additional depth of the cup holder hit against the plastic floor. You would need to cut out the plastic. Also, the cigarette lighter wire on pre lci is longer and allows you to tuck into pocket to right of the DCT without removing it. Didn't have time to further find workaround, so put pre-lci back in and put everything back.

Surprised this didn't work for you. Also sounds like there are some design differences.

Yeah mine is a 082012 build. I wonder if there are differences. I was going to buy new LCI cupholders soon. I guess I'll just have to try but it would be nice if ImpetousRacer let us know his build date so I could get a clue.

I imagine the space is there. I'm going to see if I can just use a dremel and cut holes in the plastic for the new cup holders to sit down in. Or maybe if someone here has access to explosion of console, see if there is another LCI piece that can be used there? |

The difference sounds like early build cars (07-2012) don't have the same clearance underneath the cup holder area. So, when they try and install the LCI version cupholder (which has no spring thingy) seems they (BMW) needed to make the cupholder deeper for support. In making the new LCI deeper, it seems to have an issue fitting into the opening below in the console as it hits some plastic. If this plastic can be cut or shaved, you can probably install. There must have been a change later which reduced this clearance (I'm guessing around 03-2013) when they made the other steering updates etc.

Odd thing is our pre-LCI cup holder has one short depth holder (left) and one long depth holder (right). The LCI cup holder has equal depth holders (left and right).. and while I didn't compare them, from memory they seemed equal to or shorter than the pre-LCI's right holder's depth.
So, I would ask Racer: Check to see exactly where you are hitting. Make sure it's set properly when you are trying to install it. Try to find out exactly where it's hitting (where there isn't enough clearance). If you can, take a photo. I know it's tight clearance area - but a photo will help.

So I went back to the car and I tried screwing with it for a while and thought I wasn't sliding it in at the right angle, etc. After some frustration, I brought back to the work bench and measured, and can see LCI is deeper. So I put pre-LCI cups back in, installed no problem at all. The pre-lci is not as deep and has an angle to it underneath. This is LCI: Pre-LCI isnt hollow, it is a single flat plastic piece. Hope this helps. |

no, no, im talking about the 4 collapsible springy things along the inside walls of the cup holders. they still look to be present here.(or is the pic of the old one?)
they're crap because they collapse UPWARD. and its impossible to get anything bigger than a can of red bull in them... FFS... |
