We are all very critical of "quality" of cars these days and look to all the electronics a major life-limiting concerns. When you step back, I do think we should give credit to these companies and their engineers for the amazing progress they have made in design and build quality and overall longevity of cars these days. Just think about how much wear is on a car like an M5 being driven hard over the course of 100K miles!
I agree with you DrewM5. The really nice thing though is that as car companies have tried to manage costs associated with the electronics some commonality has started to creep in and provided it isn't a couple of very expensive key pieces the ability to replace or refurbish broken automotive electronics is becoming easier and easier. I could easily see me at 100K miles on the M5 in 3-4 more years... arguably right about the time it would be paid off on a 72 mos loan if you were buying to own.

Of course, this is all exacerbated by the fact that the electronics make it so much harder - if not impossible - to work on your own car. The days of nursing your own car through 20 years of life by doing the maintenance and repairs in your garage with a fairly basic set of tools are likely history.

True as well, maybe its not fair to expect 100k as the medium term. But, most of us daily these cars so I think its just how its expectations have been set. If it can make it to 100k with very little problems that will be impressive. Those electronics scare me LOL.

There's zero chance I keep it past 50k even though I own it. Like someone else said, the electronics scare the hell out of me too. In my e46 m3 I had an smg fault that was never fixed after being looked at six times at two different shops, since then I've vowed never to keep a high end car out of warranty. I'd rather eat that cost and put it into something new I don't have to worry about, and not have any unexpected bills. I figure it will be minimum 1k anytime I bring it in.

My experience with M cars is completely different. Until I traded it in for my current M6, my 2002 E46 M3 had over 250,000 miles in 10 years of ownership, and was still going strong and fun to drive when I turned it in. Just stuck to the scheduled maintenance. So I expect to be keeping my M6 for quite a while.

if there is 60-70K miles on the clock for a 2013 would lead me to believe all highway, not a lot of stop and go. Driven the way the engine likes to be driven. Probably smooth roadways. As long as all services done, don't think issues would manifest at engine level. Probably good trans as well. And if maintenance and carfax are clean, if nothing has happened yet, chances of catastrophic failure is pretty nil.

He would be buying it with around 35K on it and is trying to gauge long term reliability compared to MBZ E63 Audi S6 and Porsche Panamera, Usually keeps his cars till around 75K before getting something else. Does a lot of combined highway and city driving.

As of today I'm 50 miles shy of 90k. Normal Service always completed. Replaced the clutch, getting ready to replace my brake fluid and couple other things. No real issues w my car. Very solid and I'm happy w it. Don't want or need a car note so it's a keeper. Bought my car nov 2012 w 40 miles on it.

you will never know the real true history of a car unless owned by family and even then....

as long as maintained service, no modding (again need to believe they didnt mod), clean car fax, PPI, etc...

The car should last well into the 100K+ range, as long as you dont abuse it and do the services and maybe a bit more preventative stuff.

I was doing general maintence plus I got a new file which caused it to slip more. I have a 2013. When I bought it in 2012 I only did x3 launches. Never did it since. Great running car. Electronic wise only my drivers door actuator went out so no soft close. Being fixed this week.

E39 540i w DINAN had 240k when I sold it in '10. Just general cooling issues and an alternator. E60 550i Dinan was just sold a couple months ago with 120k. E
Except for thrust arm bushings everything was original and in great shape.

97k "Grandpa driven miles," right?? Haha. Your car is unbelievable considering how many miles you've put on it, Marvin. That's the right way to own a car!
