Is my M5 key waterproof?

Just realized that I put my keys in the wash with my Jeans this morning! Tried them and they still work, which I can not believe. I wonder if they will keep working or decide to not work while I am driving the road? Any other experiences?

electronic chip inside and the battery will corrode. I would think it will not function anymore. Sorry to say.

Replacement fob can vary in prices, from couple hundreds to as much as $400+, incl. dealer re-programming.

Not waterproof.

Your best bet is to put the key inside a bag of rice and leave it there for a couple of weeks, and use your spare key.

Do this immediately.

From working with cell phones for years and dealing with people who have gotten their phone wet I can tell you it's a total crap shoot. If it's working now, there is no guarantee it will keep working long term. But on the other hand, it could keep working with no issue. I've seen both situations. As Stealth suggested, put the fob in a bag of uncooked rice for a while. HOPEFULLY the rice will extract any moisture in side the fob.

Agreed on the rice. Have tried that on a cell phone with good results.

I ran my last BMWs fobs through the wash several times (on accident of course). I freaked out every time. Never had a problem with them not working after 4 years.

+1 on the rice trick. I have used that with cell phones with great success. Do it now and give it a while like others have suggested.

From my experience I have to assume BMW engineers plan on the fobs making a couple trips through the washing machine. They seem robust.

Thanks for all the input as it makes me feel better that there is hope. Now would you recommend white rice or brown rice?

Thanks again

Oddly enough that's probably not a foolish question. In my experience brown rice takes more water to cook properly, so perhaps it might do a better job absorbing the moisture? But, since there would be such a small amount of water in the key, probably a moot point.
