I would assume people who are in the market for a M5 also have the cash for a M6. $16,000 shouldn't be that big of a difference for a $100k car. So why are there many more M5 than M6? And the number of peolpe viewing the M5 section is always at least 2x more than the M6 section. Why?

I also considered the M6 before placing my order for the M5. The main reason why I picked the M5 over the M6 is because girlfriend and family (not kids) like the space of the M5 more, and a bit because of the price. Another note; when I sat in the M6 driver's seat it felt squished and uncomfortable. I was a bit surprised that the bigger M6 felt smaller compared to the M3, and I don't even need to talk about the backseat.

So why are there many more M5 than M6? Is it because of the reasons I mentioned above or the look (even though the M6 is gorgeous in it's own ways, but more prefer the look of the M5)?

EDIT:
M5 also has more video reviews than the M6 (Top Gear, Fifth Gear, and etc.), and more vendor project cars and mods (IND, Manhart, 3D Design, and etc.). Maybe a vendor can let us know why?

Do you guys think the reason to the things above is because M5 may be more of a purpose built car (fastest/top four door in straight and on track) and M6 is more of a rich man's GT?

In my case it was just preference of body style and interior style. Both are beautiful vehicles. I just preferred the M5.

Not much of 'usable' back seats for the 6.

I went for the M5 simply because I like having more room for my passengers. I had an E92 M3 coupe prior to this and there was simply no way an adult could fit comfortably in the back. However, I also feel as though the M6 offers no significant improvements to the M5 so that price difference to me isn't truly justified...

It has to be the space factor. People with M5's usually have other impractical cars such as 2 seater coupes, 2+2's, or convertibles. With the M5 you get performance and practicality. It is an easier sell to the wife as well. The M6 has to compete with the AMG coupes, and Porsche 911's, Maserati ets.

I prefer the M5 just because it's more practical.

I don't understand why the M6 cost so much more then the M5. It's smaller, slower and less practical! Anyone have any insight on why the price is so different. I could understand the price of the convertible being more the the M5 but not the coupe.

Perhaps most, but for me it would have been a difficult stretch to buy the M6. But, since I was going to spend close to 100K anyway I thought it prudent to check the M6 just in case it was a perfect fit. Background: I am coming from 15 years in a 1994 Lexus SC400 which in profile looks very much like the M6. Even with the similar look I knew the performance would be of a whole different level, so I didn't mind the prospect of another decade in a similar car.

After getting to the dealership and sitting in the M6 I was very disappointed. Even though the M6 wheelbase is 6 inches longer the overall car length is the same, and BMW didn't put the space to good use. Much more cramped for the driver, and even more for the back seat passengers. With no sunroof option, the solid roof makes for an even more closed in feeling. The visibility for the driver to the rear is reduced from the Lexus as well, so the decision to stay with the M5 was an easy one for me. I'm 6' tall with a medium build, so it's not like I'm unusually large.

After i saw the M6 gran coupe i thought to myself that i would have ordered this over the M5..

i love the M5 but that M6 gran coupe is a special car that very few have..... still a 4 seater...

I havent personally clicked with the 6 series look. especially the vert which is the only way i would by the 6.... and i think its still a soft top??? boo and blah and the same time.

it does already has LCI update (LED lights, and different LCD screen for navi)

just my two cents - im funna wait for the M4 vert... thats wassup.

FYI -- the M6 coupe is faster than the M5, lighter than the M5, and its aerodynamics would permit a higher top speed if there was no electronic limit. Also, having been in both cars on the Autobahn, I feel the M6 is a bit more stable at higher speeds. Not knocking the M5, which is an amazing and more practical car, just stating facts and providing my actual driving impressions. I compare the M6 coupe to a 911s, which I test drove, and I much prefer the M6.

For me, I consider the M5 and M6 in different classes. The M5 is a practical sleeper of a car that can comfortably carry four adults and doesn't try to be too sporty/flashy. The M6, especially the Grand Coupe, competes more with the 911, R8, RS5, etc.

I think the M5 is still the best car in its class, but I would not personally choose the M6 as the best car in it's class.

That said, if you don't have room in your garage for a complementary sportier car, don't need four usable seats,etc.-- you might pick the M6 as the better all-arounder.

Mostly the style tax. Mercedes figured that out with the original CLS, which is mostly an E Class from an engineering standpoint and even costs about the same for Mercedes to build, but people will pay more for a flashy coupe-style car than they will for an equivalent sedan. The E92 is more expensive than the E90, and the 6 Series Coupe is not only more expensive than the 5, it's more expensive than the 7! And that's just the coupe form, never mind comparing the 7 to the 6 Gran Coupe or Convertible.

To the OP, people who have that kind of cash tend to have it because they don't waste it, so I suspect many people didn't see what they were getting for their extra $16K. Personally if I were in the market, I'd take the M5 over any M6 even if they were all the same price. The M5:

- Has more space in the back, whereas the 6 has less space in the back not only than an M5, but than an E92! And of course you don't have to get out to let rear passengers in or out.

- Has a more welcoming interior in the front. The beam coming down from the dash to the center console on the 6 really makes the passenger feel cut off and even sort of trapped; it's unsettling to sit there. You also dodge that OCEAN of fake carbon fiber trim on the center console. And your only recourse is opting for wood, which has no place in an M car IMHO.

- Has better exterior styling. The 6 has some sporty, aggressive, and even attractive areas when viewed from certain angles, but it doesn't have the integrated flow that the F10 M5 does.

- Has virtually the same performance

Dude this question has been addressed before, kind of. Or at least addressing the price difference.

As for the difference in the number of buyers between the two. I think it has to do with price and practicality as the 2 big reasons. I could afford either, but I decided to go with the M5, even though I am single, have no wife, no kids, no dogs, no cats, and no goldfish.

I think the M6 is too big for a 2 door car. The M6 reminds me of the Mercedes CL65, a car that to me, was way too big for a car that only has 2 doors. I like the tail lights better on the M6 than on the M5, but I hate the interior. I don't like the stand alone design of the iDrive screen in the 6 series, but some weird reason I think it looks good in the F30 3 Series. For the M6 I also don't like what they've done with the side grills. And that angle that comes down after the side grill on the fender really bothers me also. Makes it looks like a Mustang to me for some reason.

In the end I chose the M5, because it suits me better. I like the interior better, I can fit my friends in it easier, and it was more of a bargain super car. The only thing I really want from the M6 is the adjustable side bolsters. For me, the 2015 F82 M4 Coupe will be the biggest 2 door coupe high performance car I would ever get from BMW.

However, I will say that the F12 M6 is in fact decently faster than the F10 M5. That extra lightness of the F12 M6 vs F10 M5 makes more of an impact than between the E63 M6 and the E60 M5.

Here's what I wrote previously in the other thread.

Here's what you get when you buy the M6 that the M5 can't get:

- Carbon Fiber Roof
- Shorter Wheel Base
- About 150lbs lighter
- Carbon Fiber Trim Option
- White Ash Grain Wood Trim Option
- Adjustable Side Bolsters
- LED Headlights
- More sporty Steering Wheel
- San Marino Blue Exterior Color

If you buy an M6 here's what you can't get from the M5:

- Rear Seat Heaters
- Power Close Trunk
- Aluminum Trace Trim Option
- Monte Carlo Blue Exterior Color
- Moonroof
- 6spd Manual Transmission

That's about it I think. So you can see the difference where that extra $16K comes in.

I prefer the M5.

My issues with the M6:
No manual transmission available, at this time.
No sunroof.
Limited trunk space. No room for golf clubs.
I do not like the dashboard. The Navigation/Multifunctional Display looks like an after thought that was just tacked on.....very disappointing design choice.

Interesting topic, and I can say for me my first choice was the M6. When I considered what I needed the car for the M5 was the clear choice for the following:

1) Performance is relatively the same no need to split hairs
2) I own a 650ci, and yes the back seat sucks but a sexy car
3) M5 more room again, and same performance and the same options
4) Sun roof, and more room for trips golf clubs and bags
5)6"3 my heat hit roof at time in the 6
6)I would have purchased a 911 vs the 6 due to size so the M5 works for me.

Those were my primary reasons, and the 6 series is a lower production car across the board hint inflated cost. Non M cars the 6 comes with better options that are options on the 5. But I will say I hate the NAV on the M6 is looks after market. However the seats are kick ass along with the steering wheel!

Garage List
What I think:

1) Sedan market is bigger than Coupe/Cabrio market
2) M5 is the best sedan on the market so it gets a disproportionate share of the high end sedans
3) There are many other competitors in the coupe/cabrio space, some of which are quite credible. I wouldn't say the M6 is the best coupe/cabrio - Maybe cars from Porsche, Lamborghini or Ferrari can claim that. But regardless of your budget, you can't beat an M5. So M6 doesn't get a disproprtionate share, and is has fiercer competition in a smaller market.

M5 is better value than the E, CLS, and Panamera> Audi does not have a RS version yet, but based on the price for the RS5, you can bet it will be more than the M5.

M6 is priced similarly to a bunch of cars that can be argued as better cars for different reasons.

That sub $100K is a good jump from the $70K mark of a M3, but $120K extends all the way to $170K for people looking at that price range.
