Has been colder than 7' C in Holland today? I bet it has. It was minus 6' C today here in Germany. You need snow tires even when its not snowing! many people just do not realize this fact. Or you risk something like what happened to this M5.

Good question. My previous dealer in St Louis put in place a policy that their salesmen had to pull a tester car off the dealership onto a side street before a customer could get behind the wheel. This was after a female customer wrecked three new cars in their parking lot (two parked, one she was driving) while trying to pull out for a test drive.
That's why I don't let my wife test drive cars. It goes on the drivers insurance.

Sucks! Too bad for the M5 - such a lovely car. Hope the driver was alright. Even in such a state, it still looks better next to the 1 series.

I know everything about winter tires, I sell manny sets to my customers every year. But this very winter they are pointless in Holland, we have had about 5 nights with minus temperatures. (Remember Holland is next to the sea so temperatures are much milder than in Germany)

I've driven this very M5 last week and it was perfectly fine on summertires. Your conclusion that this crash happened because of these summertires is wrong and premature. I just happen to know this car was crashed while test driven by customer with DTC off... wintertires wouldn't have saved his ass.

According to one of the MINI sales guys at the local dealer a salesman took out their M5 demo when it arrived and got a bit enthusiastic... and put it into the side of a van. This was within a week of the UK launch.

I have a feeling we will be seeing more crashes, a lot more...thus, the AWD M5 will be born.

I like how the hood pops up during a crash. I think that is a mandatory safety feature in new cars.

Notice how the pedestrian head protection worked? Wonder how much it'll cost to get that hood back down? The GTR was crazy expensive to fix after a minor bump on the fender. Some guy posted the cost on a GTR forum and Nissan didn't even know it cost that much. They actually lowered the price of the parts for the dealer to fix it after a collision.

560 hp + rear wheel drive + no DTC + no experience = accident waiting to happen

Agreed, also same story i heard from the dealer.
I was supposed to drive that car this Monday. I ended up driving the press demo car that day, anyway it was a blast and i ordered the car.

I also agree with Thijs and the wintertyre stuff. But that discussion already has been going on for ages at our dutch car-enthousiast site driving-fun.com.
Goed verhaal Thijs.

This winter here in the Netherlands as far as today goes, there's no need for wintertyres at all.

Though I have a set waiting for it when it starts snowing etc.
Wintertyres in general are also a lot of marketing bs.
But when it's snowing and icey I'm happy to put them on, and you really feel the difference, but not on a rainy day and 4 degrees celsius for example...Pfff. My Brigdestone Potenzas aren't the worst tyres around in that conditions, I can assure you that.

Also the guy in Spain: Problems with the traction control...crash...the problem with the TC was: It was turned off. LOL

Cheers
Robin

PS: @Thijs This was one of the two(?) demos at BMW NL? Or was it a BMW Den Haag demo?
The one Andre and Perry drove was from BMW NL Rijswijk, that blue one, this is a dealer demo?
