Keep it going? My background: In Chicago, with Wife and 5m old son, and I've got a 2012 CLS550-4 and a 2012 991 S Spyder/MT.
CLS550-4: When I bought the CLS, we was expecting our son, so needed a 4-dr, and thought I also needed awd being in Chicago (grew up in Fla, snow and I don't mix well). There was no M5 (rumors of awd) and the CLS63/E63 were not awd, so not an option. Its a great car, looks slick, drives well, has all the typical MB stuff (fully optioned). However, without snow tires, it drives like absolute crap in the winter. Snow tires may fix it, but I'm not sure if it'll be much better than a rwd with tires... also, with the sloped roofline, the stage 1 car seat is a squeeze... 991S: Weekend / Summer car, best driving/most fun non turbo/gt3 I've owned/driven... 7sp MT is awesome, sound with PSE is awesome, much nicer interior than in the past, 911's always look good.. Once my son is 30" tall, can get a stage 2 car seat in the back - he's 27" now, so maybe a few months.. I've got a convertible, so golf clubs aren't a problem - either front seat, or standing up in the rear with the top down. I've taken our old C4S down in FL with a buddy and 2 golf bags in the back. My rule is if its not nice enough for top down driving, its not nice enough for golf... If I had to own a single car, it would be a 991, likely a 991 C4S w/PDK. Rarely are there times we actually need 2 cars for the car seat, and she has an SUV. Would need a PDK for her to drive to trade cars however... Fully disclosure, with options, its currently 130+, and a C4S is prob closer to 145. I'm blessed to be able to have 2, so this will stay for awhile. M5: Due to the above issues with the CLS550, I have considered the following: 1. sell it, drive the 991. Not a real option due to the car seat, rwd, and manual in the current car. 2. trade it in on a E63. solves the roofline issue in the back, now awd, gobs of power and easy to upgrade. Would likely be 110 all-in, to get 'S' package, etc. and I'll probably get crushed on my trade-in. I've owned a number of MBs, so I'm comfortable with and like the interior, nav, etc... the new E63 however is not very aggressive looking, quite bland actually. Even with lowering, wheels, etc I think it will remain that way. 3. trade it in on a M5. no roofline issue, power and easy upgrades. great geneology. would prob be around 110 as well, with the coming 'performance package', same trade-in issue, and only rwd. all new systems, etc, and I've personally always found bmw interior highly functional but not beautiful... not as aggressive looking as I'd like, but looks great lowered a touch and with new wheels. I'm in almost the reverse of your situation - the 991 will always be there for me, not really an option. The question is really whether to just live through the compromises, or add a E63/M5? |

Also mgent, E63 now comes with awd. I also thought about an M5 or E63 to go along with my 991, but didn't really like either enough to justify the cost. Currently have an E350 wagon for misc use and kid hauling (my son is 1 year old). May swap it for a F31 wagon later. Really no issues taking my son in the 991 though either. A lot more room in it than previous 911s.

Porsche. I always wanted an M5 from the first time I rode in my dad's e39 M5 growing up. Next car will be a Porsche. So if you have no kids and the M5 isn't your dream car then Porsche all day.

would be nice to actually option a new car and get what you want and ONLY what you want. instead of having to have useless things like sunroof, and heated /cooled seats. and put the money into options that you want. im thinking the 911 carrera s, with PDK and powerkit, 430 hp. probably kill the m5 form any speed. Sorry, yes I meant Cab - I get backwards what various manufacturers call a convertible...
E63 being awd is what initially peaked interest in trading in the CLS, however after 1 winter in the CLS 4matic (awd), I'm not sure its much of an advantage - I'm starting to believe that any of these cars, with a good set of snow tires, would be about the same in the snow - awd or rwd. Mainly - I love the way that Porsche handles their options - only a few 'packages' available, and everything is available a la cart.. The only downside is it gets pretty expensive. Fully optioned MB is like 10 or 15 extra, while a fully optioned 991 (not talking powerkit or ceramics) can easily be 30 over... Mine was like 110 base, and ended up well over 130, without ceramics, pdk, carbon, etc... |

(lucky you BTW...) exactly, as long as the traction holds. the m5 has traction and weight against it. so what do you get for your m5? cause i certainly dont think i get anywhere near the claimed 3.7 seconds. just seems to me if you line up a 3100 lb car next to a 4300 lb car the 3100 lb one is going to get to 60 quicker. did you see the Car and Driver race between the pamamera gts and the m5? the panamera gts got off the line quicker, and it took till 60 mph for the m5 to catch up. the carrera only being down 30 hp but 1200 lbs to the panamera i would think the carrera should be quicker than the panamera ??? as well, noting the race gustav posted between the c63 black series from a roll, the carrera s actually pulled a little ahead, and it took a loooong time for the c63 black to claw its way back into the lead. very impressive for a car down 110 hp, from a roll. |

Bimmer6 is the C4S faster the than the C2S? Im sure with AWD it can get the 0-60 jump and then it will get reeled back as the AWD robs it of power up top to the ground.

PDK actually makes a bigger difference than awd. Even with just rwd the 991 has so much traction off the line it is amazing. Awd really comes into play with the turbo that has a lot more torque.
