Small Rock Chip - windshield repair

Got a tiny pit in my windshield from a small rock the other day. Whats the best solution for me? Its not a crack, just a tiny pit the size of a pinhead, u cant see it from inside, but from outside you can see where it hit.

What have people done here? Call Safelite, self-fixing kits? Also, since we have HUD, is there a different process for our windshield to repair?

Try Safelite first. No regret move.

It you don't like results replace it with a BMW OEM windshield for HUD. Same process but HUD windshield has a coating on the inside or so I have heard.

Thx Stealth - does Safelite just fill in the pitting?

Yes. Sometimes it looks like now chip just very slight distortion. Sometimes it's noticeable. Best to try it and if it doesn't come out well it didn't cost anything.

Patrick, For pits, they ususally grind out the pit a little then fill with a UV activated clear resin compound. You might see a mark, but definately worth it to have it done.

Right, no reason not to do it I assume as it could lead to bigger issue. Have people had good experiences with Safe Lite?

I had what i thought to be the same thing. When i took it to satellite they said there was actually a small crack when they looked at it with the scope. The crack was more noticable after the repair =(. We ending up working out a deal for a new windshield. I have not get changed it out though. Going to hold off as long as i can.

Good to know, if theres more damage i may hold out for a bit - I dont want to hav them do it wrong. If im replacing it im going to dealer.

One thing I didnt mention - the pitting would be in my line of site if it were noticeable. Given this, what Safe Lite does wouldnt make it become more noticeable right?

Just an FYI... I had safelite repair a chip in my windshield (previous car) as GEICO recommended. I insisted I needed a new windshield (HUD, etc), but didn't have the time or energy at the time to fight with them about it.

So, they repaired the "chip" according to standards, but it was certainly still visible. In the end, who cares really, it's a lease, right? Wrong. When I turned the car in BMW whacked me with a fee for broken glass in the line of vision.

After a brief back and forth with BMW they credited my account. But it WAS an issue later on down the line. Just use your own judgement on how bad the "chip" is. It might make sense to fight for new glass now if its bad enough.

Thanks - my chip is actually tiny. ITs literally the size of a pinhead, im not even sure how they'll fill it, but like someone posted, they may shave it down to fill. My main concern is that it could lead to something else which makes me replace my windshield. According to Geico, if I do this preventative maintenance with them, it eliminates my deductible on the windshield for a future problem (or thats what I think I heard). But I also have Mechanical Breakdown with them, which is essentially their extended warranty, which would reduce my $1000 deductible on glass to just $50.

But has anyone had Safelite fix something that wasnt really visible, and make it worse?

Have SafeLite fix it. It should turn out better. They will come to your house and fill it with a UV resin.

You will most likely still be able to see something.. once visible in your LOS you will always see it. Call your insurance and tell them the defect is in your line if sight and it's making it dangerous to drive as it's a constant distraction. After they hear something like that (which is true..) they should opt to replace the windshield right then and there. Then you can bring it to BMW and have insurance cover it or reimburse you.
