Overall, 18.5 right now. That includes about 200 miles city and 750 miles highway. That is from the time I last reset the mileage. The car had about 500 miles on it at the time.

Yours seems damn low. When did you reset the mileage computer?

Reset your average mpg and speed calculations in the trip comp and BC comp. Sometimes they miscalculate.. if it still does so then have the dealer reset it. Unless you are driving very hard all the time, 8 sounds too low, almost incorrect.

I have been reseting after every fill up lately. City driving I have gotten 14mpg and Highway driving I have gotten 16mpg-17mpg. This was during my break-in.

If you have tried resetting both values in both areas in the iDrive then I would recommend having a precautionary oil change done on your car. BMW uses 5W-30 at the factory and also recommends 0W-30 (and a few others) as stated in the manual. BMW recommends Castrol brand oil. It's possible that somehow the wrong oil was put into your car (has happened to quite a lot of people lately due to misinformation/uneducated mechanics in the dealer network). The wrong oil would be a direct cause for unusually low mpg numbers.

If you plan on changing your oil I would recommend buying "German Castrol" 0W-30. Purchase at least two cases. have an oil and oil filter change done and they will use up 9 quarts. You will have 3 quarts left over for top off oil.

You can purchase it off Amazon Prime (part number 06244). You want to buy the 'European Formula' that is 'Made In Germany'. This is referred to by many as "German Castrol". I put this in my car after break-in and the car runs better during cold starts, warms up slightly faster, and generally runs slightly better. Others have found this to be true as well.

Thanks for the quick responses, didn't know the MPG computer could be reset. My dealer must have done this the other day. I drive it hard but I know theres no way I could be actually getting 8.4MPG. Last I remember, I was getting 12-13 average. Will check again tomorrow!

I updated my post with more information. If the reset doesn't work and your M5 is still showing low mpg numbers, go ahead with the oil change.. all information needed is above. Any BMW dealer will do it as this is a specified and recommended oil for the F10 M5. If they question you just mention that.
