Turn Signals

After owning my 2013 BMW M5 for a few months all I can say is this car really has it all. Amazing acceleration & speed, and every refinement somebody could want....

Huge step up from my previous vehicles which have all been American Muscle "Corvette, Challenger, Mustangs, etc."

However one thing is just horrid about this car and really bothers me...

Which German Engineer came up with the idea for these STUPID turn signals.

Press down once to initiate signal, and than touch ever so softly again to cancel.... Yea try that when weaving in and out of lanes etc.

Am I the only one who finds these turn signals infuriating???

Never liked the "feature" either. Similar to what I had in my ///M3. Probably the only downside to the car IMO.

They can take adjustment if you've never had them before. BMW was the first to use the self cancelling the signal stalk design over a decade ago and now it's harder to find cars that don't behave the same.

If you're "weaving in and out of lanes"...

A - Stop driving aggressively

B - A soft touch (before the detent) will automatically operate the signal 3 times and relieve you from needing to actively cancel the indication.

Haha yeah these new types of indicator stalk do take getting used to. I've personally encountered this from cars like the Lexus GS350 F Sport all the way to a Ford Explorer V6.

I guess in my case, I did have to sense and feel the nudge.

LOL I love it when I am weaving in and out of traffic, you must learn to use the signals and become one with the car

Don't weave in and out. Go to a track or an open empty road. You may think it's cool to do that in your M5 but it's really not. You are endangering others on the road, including yourself.

Strong dislike when anyone drives like this in traffic.

1 - Most of us here have, and some more than one. After choosing a tune, you could lay claim to as much.

2 - Most of us don't. It's one thing to enjoy a little spirited driving to experience the upper echelon of the cars capabilities in a controlled environment like a track or on a deserted open road with ample visibility. If your driving style is such that operating a turn signal is a concern, you're doing it wrong, need to lay of the Molly, or perhaps both.

Everybody is different, and expects different " thing s to work certain way "
for me .... there is nothing to complain I like it always did.
But, I have had few BMW beforehand and this seems Natural to me.
I'm not trying to be a smart ass here, but it works just the way " I " like it.
It takes some time to get used to, but with time try to go back to anything pior to that and you WILL miss the german engineering ...

That is my 5 cents
Cheers !

I think the response that is missing from this thread is:

"if the slow people would not camp in the left lane and would get over for faster traffic then I would not need to weave around them."

as someone who has the challenge above on a regular basis, it was an effort to adapt to the turn signals initially but I haven't thought about it in years... guess that means the turn signal behabior isn't a lasting concern.

don't even get me started on why I can't close regular doors without two attempts now that I am used to soft-close on the M5.
