At this point I tend to think these people are just following BMW's lead:

on an X1

on the M 235

This thing:

And obviously the examples go on and on.
I'm just waiting till every "M-sport" line has all the badging -- M328ix, M535i, MX1, etc.

Maybe it sells more units, but it really is becoming a dilution of the top of the marque and a big F U to those who have paid to have the bespoke versions of BMW cars that are produced by the ///M division and warrant the badge.

On the other hand, at the end of the day, the joy of my car comes from the performance, luxury, comfort, and tech that no badge can be a adequate substitute for.

Easy guys, if you travel to China these days you will see a lot of long wheel base "m5" on the street, mostly converted from Chinese domestic model 520~fake fenders, fake exhaust tips, fake everything...

Reminds me of my encounter with a M Sport 535i at a gas station last year. M badges on BOTH kidneys and the guy said he would embarrass me on the highway lol! Ever since, I've been wishing to run into him again

Wow I can't believe the animosity here... You guys have m5's these guys wish they had m5's, what am i missing? Are you guys mad at half the women in the us carrying around fake LV purses? I have far better things to worry about than guys pretending to have something they dont.

Again, just imagine having the resources to own/lease/drive a new BMW, and feeling so insecure that you need to put a fake name on it. I mean, you have an 80ish thousand dollar car (550 as the example)..but you totally destroy it by advertising your complete and total stupidity. "no, it's really an M5"

I have had 15 new BMW's, never had the urge to rename one with some lie. I have loved each of them for different reasons (even my X6 back in 09)

People should just be more satisfied with what they have and stop being so concerned with what total strangers on the road think they have.

M diluted the brand ... so there's nothing wrong with guys placing a M badge on their cars (on the basis that there are M parts on them). But yes, wrong for guys sticking eg a M5 badge on a non M5.
