What would you pair up with an M5?

I know this is subjective and "in the eyes of the beholder", but would appreciate your views. I really enjoy my 2013 M5 and use it as a daily driver with the occasional spirited highway run. I am thinking of adding a second car (used is fine since I have a price range that tops out at say 65k). I am considering the following : 911s ,or an SL550, or a Z06 , or an M3 convertible. If you were considering these cars which would you lean to?

I plan to eventually add a "weekend" car as well - focused on a cabrio. Top of the list has been a 911, but the reviews of the 2013 Boxster S sound interesting. Have also considered the M3 convertable. never been a big fan of the SLs.

I've been toying with the idea of a Subaru WRX STI sedan for the AWD in the north east

I lean towards the 911s or 4s with PDK which means a 2009 or newer but would not rule out a Z06 (although the Porsche has more cachet).

911S would be my choice.

But seriously. I'm thinking of a weekend/track car also and the models mentioned here are under consideration. One of my considerations is operating costs. When I start thinking about consumables like brakes for example, I start thinking the Vett maybe the best bang for the buck. Thoughts?

Light car to go with a heavier car. 991 or maybe a GT-R? But for me this is my only car - "2 cars in 1"....

GT3. Although it was a better match to the E60 in nature... both high revving "bat out of hell" sounding machines.

But still, GT3.

Not for nothing, but if you want to go on the cheaper side of things. You should also consider the Fiat Abarth. With a tune and some other extremely cheap bolt on's you can achieve over 200hp and 200tq in it, which is fantastic for a car that only weighs 2,300lbs. Also, very cheap to maintain, and the exhaust note is almost on par with some exotics.

I myself am considering one. I just need to figure out my parking situation first, cause my stupid HOA only allows us 2 parking spots. Doh!

Two choices for me, try and track down a absolute base spec M3 Manual, or base spec 911S 2wd manual...you have the luxury monster, so you need to complement it appropriately...thats my plan!

(or in reality a double cab diesel Toyota Hilux or VW Amorak ute (think F150 but 4/5 of the size), which I need, as a regularly use my m5 as a surf wagon, mtn biking car, on the school run, kids eating sushi it, dog delivery van you name it!) - good news the m seems to lap it up!

Cheers

Some of the suggestions are more like 165k rather than OP's 65k range.

I'd say a 911(997.1/.2), but that's me. M3 would be a nice choice but depends on if you want 2 BMWs or have something different.

Hope you will find your solution soon and share with us what you get eventually.

Question to the OP.. Will you be looking for a CPO car, or does that no matter? Will you be modding?

Since you have two convertibles in there, big performance is not really a concern. Are you looking for a cruiser or more of a high strung car?

How practical does this car need to be? The SL and M3 are def more practical than the Z06 and 911. I've had the latter two, and the 911 (turbo) at stock ride height was tedious on any type of driveway. Actually had better clearance with the short overhangs on the Z06.

Engine wise, stock, not sure what SL you're looking at, but you will have more torque than the M3. In fact all those cars will have more low end grunt than the M. Coming from the M5 where you make more torque at idle than the M3 makes max, you might be frustrated unless you are seeking to rev the piss out of it to get the most power.
Z06 has power everywhere, and gets surprisingly good gas mileage.

Fit finish, stay away from the Z. Later ones are way better.

So are you looking for
- performance (Z06 then 911)
- cachet (Porsche, benz, M3)
- Cruiser (benz, M3)
- Track toy (Z06, 911)
- All arounder (M3, 911)
- Bang for buck Z06 all day. Parts, gas, etc..

To me the M3 is too much like the M5. Becomes sort of a coolaid choice. The 911 or the Z give you a different feel, and also expand the groups of people you can chat with about stuff. I enjoy relating to domestic and European enthusiasts. But that's just me

Good luck!

G
