It's not just BMW's, I believe there was legislation put in place a few years back. That is across the EU, not sure if the rest of the world have followed suit.
Although they describe it as a black box, aircraft reference, it's just the ECU's hold data for the last few seconds before an impact is detected. All to help aid accident investigation. |

Wow!
Shows how well BMW's are built and how safe they are two people surviving a crash with minor injuries at 155mph is incredible! It's very unfortunate that the back seat passenger died from being ejected out of the sunroof they probably were not wearing their seat belt.
