Carbon Ceramic Brake (CCB) squeal solved?

OK - I know not all CCB cars squeal. And some only when their are wet conditions. Mine squealed embarrassingly bad all the time. Especially when dropping off my kid at her school in drop off line when it was in constant stop/start conditions.

While I loved the stopping power and looks off the CCBs, they were driving me so crazy I was considering either selling the car, or at least swapping out the breaks to a non-CC variety.

But, as a random course of events would have it, my brakes no longer squeal.

Here's what happened.

It started with buying a set of Forged Vossen VPS 306 wheels from another forum member. Love them on the car!

Front Wheels - 20X9.5 - ET26
Rear Wheels - 20X11 - ET31

What if found out from Vossen prior to their arrival was that they may not fit on the CCB cars. As it turned out, they did not!

When I went to fit the wheel, the brake dust shield behind the rotor was catching the inside of the wheel and would not allow it to be bolted on - let alone spin freely.

It required a trimming off approximately 1/2 inch with a set of tin snips in order get it on and the wheel to spin freely.

Next - half of the reason I was getting these wheels was so I could get a bigger footprint on the rear and go with a more aggressive tire that hook up the better. I was tired of spinning my wheels every time I left a red light.

BTW - I have some work done to the car and it's pushing a good amount of hp over stock...

Before anyone gets crazy about the tire I chose, I'd like to preface that I live in Las Vegas and we only get any kind of meaningful rain here a couple times a year. I wound up putting on a set of Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2s on the car. 265/35/20 up front, and 305/30/20 out back.

First of all - no more wheel spin (unless I'm really, really, on it). And, for that matter, hardly any way to get the ABS to engage. They stick like glue. The tires transcend the car!

But, the amazing part is - NO MORE BRAKE SQUEAL!!!

I have no idea if a smaller diameter brake dust shield, a lighter rim (I had the CP 601s with PSS's), or the non-run flats changed things. Maybe one of them? Maybe the combination of them?

The CCB issue can be very frustrating; another M5 owner here in Miami recently traded his CCB's for regular brake setup due to the same issue. He was at the point of selling his car if he was unable to work out a swap. I never heard the issue with my own ears but can only imagine how bad it must be to consider getting rid of the car. Anyways, good thing yours has disappeared.

Glad you're liking the tires as well.

Im guessing it was the wheel weight change. Good luck with it.

Thanks guys. It was really bad.

I wonder if changing the diameter of the dust shield changed the resonating frequency of the pads/discs/shield and subsequently quelled the squeal.

In any event, so happy it's gone.

Is there a difference in calipers on the carbon to non carbon? I see one is gold and the other is blue is there a difference in the actual caliper or just pads and rotor? If they are the same swapping out just rotor's or pads may help a lot of the squeal instead of swapping the entire setup.

Every component of the CCB and regular steel are different. Dust shield, rotors, calipers, pads, master cylinder, brake cooling ductwork, software programming, etc. I'm sure there is more but that's an accurate start to the list.
