I sat in some cars today...

In case anyone is interested.

I did spend time in the M4 again, back to back with an M5. The M4 did have the full leather I like so much. However I did begin to notice a few differences and felt the M5 was a touch better. On the exterior though I think the M4 is far better looking, and the Austin Yellow is stunning in person in my opinion (far far better than the pictures).

Link to the pics. Sat in just about every one of these, crazy fortunate day:

I would highly suggest if you want a M3/M4 when they first come out that you search around and find a dealer and get on a list. Dealers have been taking deposits and orders for well over a year and half.

US order guides and hopefully pricing should be coming in to us dealers mid to late February.

3 NJ dealers had 0 people in their wait lists in January. In fact, 2 of them didn't even have a wait list and made one after I called them up. You are probably seeing a lot of people putting orders because David works online with a lot of people in the forum and probably locals. The dealerships here are clueless and I dont think a lot of people (non-car geeks) even knew about the new Ms.

Unfortunately you are right. When I was shopping around dealerships to setup my F10 M5 Euro Deliver, I called about 63 dealerships in the USA and over half of them knew nothing about the F10 M5 and didn't even know the order bank would soon be open for orders. If you really want a car like these, you really have to be persistent and even educate some of the salesmen and dealers who should be educating you. The one thing I learned was that it was not their job to know about the new ///M coming out, it was only their job to sell it to you once it was on their showroom floor.

I ended up getting the most answers from BMW NA Corporate in the end.

Dude, thanks for the pictures! Couple of things I have questions on and a couple of comments:

How was the new Z06? Also, how as the new Ghibli?

You took some very good pictures of the leather in the M4. I noticed that it is not truly a Full Leather like it is on the M5/M6. The bottom half of the doors don't have leather on them like the M5/M6 do, and once again as you pointed out earlier, no alcantara ceiling liner. Overall, I think the M3/M4 is a step up from the E92 M3 absolutely, but it's clearly not on the same level as the M5/M6, but the price of the full leather option on the M3/m4 reflects this as well.

Once again, you da man.

Actually last BMW committee meeting I went to each of the 12 dealers that were present all had list over 25+ people for each model. This forum although large is only a very very small representation of the BMW community. Believe it or not most of Davids sales are out of state.

Either way yes there are dealers out there who have little to no one on their list which is awesome. Either way if you want one IMO I would get on a list. Its just advice take it if you like

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't each dealership receive X number of allocations and they are all treated equally? Or is it first come first serve? If it's first come first serve, does the queue start when BMW announces the prices and opens up the orders officially OR does it actually start months ago maybe somehow there is an intermediate system in US to keep future orders?

If it's just the case that every dealer gets 1-2 allocations a month, I don't think there is a difference between a guy who orders in December with a deposit or a guy who finds a dealer who is clueless with no waiting list and orders in April. Again, I might be completely wrong.

Don't want to thread jack OP thread anymore so this will be the last post. You can PM me if you need anything else.

You are asking a ton of question in this post, but to answer your question, no not all dealers are equal. Some dealer get more allocations then others on certain models. Its all based off a variety of factors, population, unit sold, etc..

Nobody knows how many allocations each dealer will get yet on the M3/M4 and nobody knows if ED orders will come out of US allocations. If each dealer gets anywhere from 1-5 allocation a month then yes you would be more inclined to find a dealer who has little to no list, however not all dealers are created equal and not all dealers will sell the car at the same price. Expect to see a lot of dealers marking these cars up over MSRP and if ED orders come out of US allocations and a dealer is only getting 1-2 allocations a month it will be hard to find a dealer who will be willing to do ED orders. just my 2 cents

as far as orders getting finished, there is no dealer who gets cars made faster then others. I am not sure how that queuing system works but I would imagine it has to do with they build the orders as they come in. So the dealers who submit customer orders first would get their cars built first??I am not sure about the process.

Yes, as this was my 2nd time spending time in the M4 (after Detroit) I spent extra time (since nobody seemed to care on the M4 - everyone was looking at the M235i and i8) and I did just notice the leather doesn't cover the bottom of the door etc. So definitely a step down, but when you're in the car not a huge step imho as you're looking at that beautiful curved contrast stitching right in front of you and up along the glovebox. I still think it's strong and the exterior is seductive; esp in Austin Yellow (which isn't here but was in Detroit).

Z06 - beyond serious. Saw this in Detroit as well. Race seats, etc.

Ghibli - very very nice on the inside in the front seat. Rear seat room was quite tight. Trunk is huge. The car I photo'd had every option incl carbon fiber which I think is a must on that car after seeing it. (I have seen Ghibli's without it)

I just called my dealership and asked to be put on the ordering list. Told him I wanted to order an M3. He replied with, "2 door or 4 door?"

Very interested to see how the Ghibli does. The website to build one is very clunky, but seems priced right into Panamera 4S range and thus in M5 territory. Plus seeing the commercial at the super bowl certainly raises eyebrows. I also wonder how Maserati will handle servicing all these "cheap" Maseratis as I believe there is only 1 dealer in the northeast...

Ghibli - I think most sticker around mid - high 80s.

i8 - got to get up personal inside the i8. So so beautiful. Leg room in the rear - almost non-existant but there are seats and LATCH anchors!

I've decided to take a quick trip up to Philadelphia for the Autoshow that starts tomorrow morning. I'll be taking more pix myself. Apparently they have an Austin Yellow M4 and a Sapphire Black Metallic M3. I'll report back when I get back to DC.
