408m wheels for winter - need spacer?

Hello All,

I just picked up a lightly used 2013 M5, along with a square set of 408m 19" wheels with snows for winter use (from original owner of M5). Now, the tires are all 255 and the wheels are all 9x19 ET35. After doing some reading, it appears that these won't fit the rear wheels without a 10mm spacer - can anyone confirm this? Short of pulling the wheels off and trying myself, I haven't been able to confirm based on a search of the forum and online.

Unless I don't understand ypur question, did you lower the car or have a higher sidewall on the tires? Now I'm new to the M5 having just ordered one, but, the 408M's are the OEM choice for the winter set up. You would not need spacers.

Everything is stock, but the problem is the stock wheel setup is staggered, so the fronts are ET32 and rears are ET25. So, if there are four ET32 wheels, I suspect there will be a problem with the rears rubbing on the brake callipers based on other posts. I hoped someone else who was running 408M's could let me know.

Yes you will need a spacer in the rear. It appears you have 4 front wheels. The advantage to that setup is you can rotate them front to rear without dismounting the tires thereby extending tread life and saving some money. The disadvantage is that you need to use a spacer in the rear. 7mm spacer would equal the stock ET25 rear offset. But a 10mm would be just fine. I actually used spacers with my 408m setup just to improve the look and stance, but it was not great because pushing the winter tires outward greatly increased the amount of road grime spit up on the side on the car in winter. Hope that helps.

Great, thanks for the confirmation Matt. I don't mind that they are all fronts because, as you pointed out, this lets me rotate them without having to dismount. Now, I'll just have to find some 10mm spacers and extended lugs - any recommendations beyond the usual H&R or ECS Tuning models?

the official spec for the 408M

Front wheel: 19x9" ET32
Rear wheel: 19x9" ET25

There are a few threads in this forum under 'Winter wheels' which caution owners that to make sure the proper wheel is to put in to the proper place (if you reverse them on installation, esp. putting the rear to the front, then you are going to rub)

Thanks. I had perused most of the threads on winter wheels but could not find confirmation that people were using the 408M's as staggered or square - a lot of people seemed to indicate they were going square, but this seemed to pertain only to the tire size and not necessarily to the wheels.

there was one thread in particular (with pics) showing the owner put those wheels in reverse and after the advise given here to him, he had the shop put the correct wheels back to the proper place and the rubbing was no longer an issue. btw, it's a square setup and that's why it is highly recommended the owner to mark the wheels when putting them on.

I used macht schnell spacers. They come with extended lugs. Ordered from IND.

Thanks, I had seen those mentioned a few times and they look like a good option.
