Real Fuel Consumption F10 M5 6MT - Fort Lauderdale-Tampa
This is FEI only! I don't want to start an argument of why people don't buy an M car if they care about fuel consumption.
I do appreciate the range improvement over the E60 M5 for long highway trips because of the better MPG and the larger tank. The F10 is more of what M5 should IMO, a highway jetliner. Fort Lauderdale Airport to Downtown Tampa, Exit to Exit about 260 miles '13 F10 M5 6MT w/ 4,000 miles AVG. SPEED - 88.2 MPH FUEL CONSUMPTION - 20.3 MPG UPDATE comparison vs '12 E92 M3 DCT w/ 8,000 miles Same trip AVG. SPEED - 83.5 MPH FUEL CONSUMPTION - 19.2 MPG '13 M5 vs '12 m3 AVG. SPEED - + 4.7 MPH IN FAVOR OF THE F10 M5 FUEL CONSUMPTION - + 1.1 MPG IN FAVOR OF THE F10 M5 FUEL TANK - +4.5 GALLONS IN FAVOR OF THE F10 M5 Conclusion: Don't race against an F10 M5 in long trips...

Wish I didn't drive up and down hills like Jack and Jill.. I get 16MPG but I like the skinny pedal a lot!

Agree I am pleasantly surprised to get 22mpg with Highway cruising (boston-new york) averaging 80 mph leaving it in 6th. makes the car range insane (relatively speaking! ) on one tank of gas.
However work commute in heavy traffic even with auto stop/start on is 17 and drinks like a v8 as expected I thought it was funny that when at the track I would get a low fuel warning with over a quarter tank of gas left ha

I got 18.2 on my initial trip back to Austin from Houston after picking up the car with 3 miles on it. That was 170 miles. Currently with 412 miles on the car and mostly in town driving since, I am down to 14.8, not so good. But I didn't buy the car to care about gas mileage. If I did, I would have kept my 535 since it got pretty good mileage even with the Dinan Stage 2.

Just drove to Lawton Ok and back for a bowling tournament. It was hot today so I was using the AC on the way back. I got 21.1 mpg on the way up without AC yesterday morning and overall, 20.1 which included driving around Lawton to and from the lanes and hotel. Had a lot of fun driving the car. It's so smooth at 100 you don't even notice you are going that fast. No tickets but on the way back I got in a convoy with a couple of Mercedes (430 SL and 250) doing around 90-95. I ran away from them a couple of times to about 120, they are slow, couldn't catch up so I had to slow down for them. My average speed for the trip up was only 71mph because I took a route that went through small towns using 281. On the way back I took a route that used US 44, US287 and IH 35. No stops and the average speed was 79mph. It is around 350 miles each way and I was able to make it on one tank each way.

20mpgs is really good, consider your average speed is 88mph.
I bet you can get 25-30mpg or better if you average 50 mph. It's a lot better than the M3. I just got a OEM engine software update (240E) that allows me to get 26 mpgs on a maddening-slow 60 mph cruise. |

Good post!
I'm sure all owners do care about MPG in some shape, I know I do! 20+ for a performance super car is amazingly good considering how much power you have on tap. This is a good selling point to wifey when we upgrade. Right now I get around 16.5 in my v8 M3 and that is way thirstier than in my IS-F with the same V8. I guess the BMW turbo's make the car more efficient? OP: I noticed you said you had a 6-speed manual, do you think the DCT would fair better or worse?

I wouldn't think there is much diference but based on the numbers I read from the DCT post...the average speed is significantly different 88 MPH vs. 79 MPH...

My first road trip in the M5 - took it from NJ (right near Lincoln/Manhattan) up to Newport, Rhode Island with a stopover in Cranston, RI both times, and made it on one tank. I was pretty shocked having come from a C63. Drove it pretty tame given my break in on efficient both ways. Nonetheless, very happy with the results.

Great post! So the M3 without the turbos is less efficient as I thought I loved my old IS-F that averaged 24 mpg for the 700 mile trip from Portland to San Jose, CA! Seems we have almost the same cars (M3 + s2000)

No Idea - but I never went on any road trip w/o having to fill up at least once.
