I'm an idiot.

I was seriously considering selling my 3800 mile F10 M5. We have cold salty roads here and not much grip. I like to drive with all settings in sport+ and manually shift but every time 1-2 and 2-3 shift under any sort of power kicked the car sideways almost every time and into oncoming traffic (terrifying). Only on hot summer days was i enjoying the car. So today i realized the entire time i've been driving in MDM mode!! So i switched on normal traction/stability mode and WOW its a dramatic difference. Same traction control coming in but no sideways kick at all! I feel 1,000 times safer driving under power now. I'll save the MDM for hot days only from now on and enjoy using the stability control the rest of the time. It works damn good for keeping the car straight! I feel like an idiot for not using it all this time.

This doesn't make much sense. How could you have been in MDM mode and not have known it? The only ways to engage MDM is to program it into one of the steering wheel buttons or to press the DSC button on the center console. If you program the steering wheel button, there is a confirm action that requires you to press the M steering wheel button again, there is even a warning that pops up on the instrument cluster to confirm your action. With the center console button, you have to deliberately move your finger to press the button. MDM mode is not engaged automatically when you start up the car. Also, how could one miss the bright yellow MDM light in the middle of the instrument cluster, that says MDM? If some bright yellow light was in front of me, it would draw my attention and I would find out what it meant. Usually yellow means caution, and it is worth investigating. So I'm just wondering how could a person not know they are in MDM mode, when it takes some effort to get into it??

Also, since you've been using MDM all this time, you should be a better driver than most of the M5 drivers on this board by now. Lol!

I knew i was in MDM mode. What i did not realize is MDM mode = stability control OFF. I thought it was just less aggressive traction control. So yes i had it programmed in my M1 and M2 settings. I got used to the lights on the dash since thats how i always drove it. Lol. But wow i'm glad i turned it off this time of year. Now the car is actually nice to drive.

Wow...not trying to be rude... But I'm disappointed and shocked that there are folks out there that clearly don't respect the kind of power and weapon a 4400lb piece of steel,etc..,Is that's being thrusted through time and space with close to 600 HP.
The fact that you didn't take the time to understand your vehicle (esp with this kind of power) is very concerning and you should consider taking more care to understand what you have and how you use it.
Americans.... It's these kind of examples that makes me want to move to Germany.

In MDM mode, Stability Control is not completely OFF! That's the difference between MDM and DSC OFF. In MDM, Stability Control is still ON but gives you more freedom before interfering; however even in MDM if the road is wet and you push the car hard (specially when you turn) then you may lose the control. Anyways, be careful and enjoy the ride of your beast

MDM isn't actually all that bad even in wet conditions. It's just that you have to be careful if you are in a turn and have MDM engaged and then mash the throttle while you are in a turn. The M Dynamic Mode in the F10 M5 will let you do a full drift, whereas in the E60 M5 it would not. MDM is supposed to be considered the half way Stability Control Off mode, but in the F10 M5 it's more like 75% Off. With the Competition Package it's even worse, it's almost like 90% Off. The MDM with the Comp Package is programmed for greater slip angles.

In the E60 M5, the MDM was never really considered lethal because the V10 had no torque down low. With the S63tu engine though, the torque will definitely break the tires loose in an instant. I myself have done full drifts in MDM mode on the F10 M5. I will just say that MDM is a pretty good feature but I think it could use a bit more intervention to keep the car from drifting completely. DSC ON works perfectly for that though. There is a good video out there somewhere with some guy showing the difference between DSC ON, MDM, and DSF OFF on the racetrack. In the video he demonstrated that how with MDM you can still spin out.

I do use MDM on occasion, but I am always careful with it when the car is in a turn.

Don't be so hard on him. Modern Day M cars are not easy to learn. But yeah in Germany, the general population understands that cars on the road are part of a greater system where they need to drive a certain way to be efficient. They understand traffic system efficiency 1000% better than Americans do. Truth be told I'm still learning stuff about the M5 all the time.

I never drive the car on wet roads at all and i carefully modulate the throttle in corners. Thats all good. I've raced cars and motorcycles over 20 years. I have a ton of track driving under my belt. I can drift the car with full control on the track. What i mean is a perfectly straight road. Power comes on, shift 1-2 or 2-3 and the rear tires kick sideways. Not jerking the steering, not doing anything stupid just driving straight under power. I realize there is SOME stability control in MDM but under power its not very active in this car if it is at all. Its not doing anything to help stability while accelerating in a straight line. On warm summer days its fine but anything under 60 degrees and thats how it acted for me and i really did not enjoy driving it on the street until i switched off MDM. I would not be bothered by some wheelspin on shifting what bothered me is the rear end kicking out almost every time i was on the throttle hard and shifting lower gears.

Not trying to be rude? Your post is extremely rude actually. Not even in a proper passive aggressive way just very condescending and rude. Lets hit the track any time and see which one of us knows how to drive Ok? Stereotyping all americans as well. Get ahold of yourself! Wow. Don't give us M drivers a bad rep. My whole family is from Germany by the way since that seems to have any relevance on anything. :

Lol... Ok... Lol

I've re-read my post. While it may have been direct and came across as pompous, I didn't call you names or challenge you in any way. I was honest and made a genuine suggestion. Re-read it without adding any inflection or undertone. Just read the words as they're written.

But you should check YOURSELF chief. You have NO idea who I am, or what kind of skills I hold. Just as I don't know you.... But I'm not the one proactively challenging someone I don't know. You must be mighty brave or ill-advised. Furthermore, I don't recall claiming I was a better driver than you.....??? I'm guessing you determined that while reading between my written lines....? Do you make a point to get yourself into precarious predicaments?

Let me know when you're in Philly or NJ area next. I get out to Pittsburgh a few times a year as well. I'll send you all my contact info via a PM, and I'd be happy to meet up with you.

Dudes, chillax. It's not that big a deal. Otherwise please take these discussions to the F8x side of the forums where such things persist often.

If not, I'll have to call big daddy Vic and ColdList and maybe Boots for backup. You don't want that.

LOL. I am smiling ear-to-ear that someone picked up that one.

I was going to add in something about 'bow-staff skills' but thought that would be too obvious.
