used bmw m5 vs new m3 vs Porsche macan
Hello All
This is my first post here. I'm looking to buy a car and stuck among these choices. I am looking for a 4dr car that is luxury, sport and has that wow factor. I have a family of four so can't go with coupe. I test drove the Porsche macan S and really liked the way it handles, the looks are decent and interior is luxurious. My built with options came close to 73-74K. I also test drove the new BMW M3 sedan and it's almost the same price with options. Finally, found a used BMW 2014 M5 with only 6000 miles, with executive package for sale for 77K. It was bought at bmw sales and I'm guessing it was a loaner but not sure how it has only 6K miles. Car fax is clean and otherwise car looks great. Which one would you buy and why? Pros and Cons please. Thanks a bunch. |

I chose the used M5 route over the new M3/Macan S for reasons below:
Macan S was easily scratched because (i) limited utility [back seat is actually pretty cramped as is trunk space; (ii) lack of performance compared to the other two; and(iii) first year for the entire model. You will quickly get bored if you buy this car. Between the M3 and M5, RPiM5 details the difference better than I would: http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...1038862&page=2 |

Just my opinion, but there's no comparison between the M3 and M5 if you're looking for a luxury interior. The M5 also has more room for your family. If you're set on buying new and that's your price point then the M3. If you're a track person (depending on the track) the M3 is a lot of fun, but on larger tracks with longer straightaways and sweeping turns the M5 is crazy fast for as big of a car as it is. As far as the Macan, it's an SUV and in a different class for comparison and you'll have to decide.

M5 hands down, I've owned 2 M3s and have driven the Macan, not my cup of tea.
2014 with 6K for $77K is a great deal, but what you said about it being a loaner would concern me. I would dig into the history before you pull the trigger. Good luck, welcome to the forums!

I checked the carfac and it's clean. Whatelse should I look at?
Odd thing is that it's at a Lexus dealer who said they bought it from bmw sales. Car fax shows single owner. But shows registered by rental agency. Car was bought in 12/2013 and has 6K miles. I am kinda confused by all this. Also another question, with new M5 probably out in 2-3 years, will it lead to significant depreciation of the car and loss of value? |

Get the VIN, call your local BMW Service Center and ask for a service history. Looks like you're in Texas, by chance are you in Houston?
In terms of new model, the new Gxx isn't likely to hit the US until 2019.

M5. More room and power than M3 and both the M cars are in a different class than the Macan when it comes to sportiness and wow factor.

M5 all the way.
I just checked cars.com. There is a 2014 m5 on sale in Porsche of Orlando for 77k. Fully loaded except B&O and night vision. Has competition package, full leather, exec, drivers assist. Has 17k miles on it. So based on that, could be ok? Although see if there is anyway to find out if it was a lemon.

How do you know? I was told its bought from bmw sales?
The one I saw doesn't have Competition package and certainly would add value. 2013/2014 M5 have had a significant depreciation so if I look around I should find something less than 80K. |

@hxs.. I have thought about m3 and don't think it's the right option for me because- to me interior luxury and space are important and m5 is much superior in that aspect. Also I'm not a race track person so I am not just looking for a sports car. Another attractive option is M6 Gran Coupe, although it's too expensive-- now if I could find a used one close to my budget it may be a very good option.. How about leasing M6 Gran?

If you are looking for a luxury 4 door sedan, then M5 is definitely your choice. You can't compare M3 and M5 in term of luxury and space.
However, if you mind about ground clearance. Macan Turbo is a good choice. You can drive the car any terrain. Did a test drive a month back, I was impressed with how the car's handling and power delivery. Hope this help. Let us know your decision.

if going for looks id probably go for the new m3. especially in that yellow with black wheels. with a tune it will probably keep up with the m5. and still big enough to carry your family of 4. i hear it sounds better too. plus for fun factor its so much lighter than the m5. like almost 800 lbs lighter?? thats A LOT. and probably much better on fuel.
unless youre a really bg guy, i dont think youll notice the little extra space of the m5. it has a wide center console anyway. luxury - get teh full leather and its pretty rightthere withthe m5. not quite, but close. |
