M5 more than just power???
The price of a used M5 is more than fully loaded top of the line 3 series. I know the M5 engine, brakes, transmission and all the go fast bits are leaps ahead of 3 series and the M5 was the top dog for bmw however..
My question, is the M5 that much better than top line 3 series in every other category besides performance? like drive, comfort, quality etc... Is a 12 M5 still a better buy than a brand new fully loaded 3 series ? Having never driven either I am curious like if you jumped out of your M5 and into new 3 series would you cringing and miss your M5 right away, if you know what I mean |

M5 is simply different class of high performance car. No doubt about it. If you go now and test drive an ordinary 3 series, say a fully loaded 335 with Mperformance kit added on, the driving dynamics is nowhere near the M5. I will give the 335 advantage on driving comfort, that is, less bumpy ride than the M5.
In terms of price between a 12 M5 vs 15 3series, that will depend on your budget and criteria on what you want in a bimmer. Do you want to spend $65K on a 3 yr-old M5 or $65K on a loaded up 3series ? mind you, the LCI MY2016 will be here in couple of months time with slight bump in hp & tq and with brand new gen engine. |

What's the difference
The F30 3 series is an incredibly competent, very comfortable, good handling, high performance saloon that allows extremely rapid progress on both motorways or winding country roads.
The M5 offers breath taking performance from engine, transmission and chassis. It encompasses a far wider range of operation, from comfort cruising to back road barnstorming. A drive in a 3 Series is enjoyable, in an M5 memorable. In a 3 series you'll enjoy the drive, in an M5 you'll look forward to the drive and want to get up early so you can more fully exploit the car's performance capabilities The 3 series is highly capable, the M5 exciting, stunning, awesome. Whether you miss the M5 or not mainly depends on how you drive. If you cruise around in the M5, the 3 Series would feel less luxurious and a little less powerful, but still highly capable If you exploit the M5's full capabilities, the 3 series would leave you feeling very short changed in all the areas where driving dynamics matter..... |

The difference between regular BMW and M-car is night and day.
As far as top of the line 3 series (fully loaded 335) vs M5, there is nothing comparable including drive, comfort, quality, performance, class, etc... (IMO) If you wanted to compare 550i vs M5, I would say 550i is more comfortable but 3 series vs M5? noway...

If ur gonna go 3 series, better to stick with M3. I've tracked my M5, and had 335i loaner, and definitely think a 3 series would be more fun to drive at its limit. It's definitely more tosseable whether ur turning or entering a freeway. The M5's crutch is its massive weight.

Recently had my 2013 M5 in for an issue, so they gave me a 2015 328i loaner. Lets just say it was fun, but by the end of the 3 days, I was more than happy to get back into my M5.
