How difficult is it to do a JB4 install on my own?

I've always wanted to do my own work on my car and I've ordered a JBL 4 with bluetooth etc. and I was wondering how difficult would this be for a complete novice? The PDF instructions seem alright, but unfortunately I can't find any videos on how to do this, which I'm sure would be much more helpful. I don't mind paying the local performance shop, but I have all the tools to do it if I wanted to. What kind of trouble am I looking at?

The passenger side intercooler is the biggest challenge. Other than that it's a piece of cake.

Having said that, why not go Bootmod3 or other flash tune?

I wanted something that reverts back to stock easily I guess and it seems like JB4 is one of the most popular options with the best customer support and I don't really want to send my ecu away to be flashed. I could still cancel my order as I placed it last night... I've not heard of the bootmod3. Any chance you could explain that? Do I have to remove my ecu and send it away etc?

Best customer support? Uh, no.

Bm3 is loaded via your OBDII and has a variety of maps to choose from (w/ or w/o cats, 91/93/100 octane, or custom map from a reputable tuner like Halim@HCP ).

Jb4 is for people looking to push the limits (over 22psi) not for someone looking to add a bit of power to their car.

Oh wow. Just found a good video on how to do the bootmod3 install. Thanks for the help. I'm definitely gonna cancel my order on the JB4 and go with bootmod3. Seems like its the way easier option and future proofed to my limits which will probably end up being stage 2 by 2020 depending on how the new job goes. Mucho thankos

They have an awesome Facebook page...search for bootmod3 enthusiasts. The customers themselves help each other out, Dzeno and Halim are the owners tuners and provide loads of value. More than I can say for JB4.

I have both BM3 and JB4/BCM installed. BM3 is vastly superior.

Need to access IC only if you are going with the BCM. Other part to be careful is the wiring and OBD cable routing through the firewall.

The JB4 is very easy to install, for a basic install you can do OBDII and TMAP sensors in 15-20 minutes. The JB4 removes without a trace when needed and provides a lot of options not possible via flash only. It's a tuning tool so you can also use it with a flash map. Read up on the recent M3/M4 JB4 + MHD back end flash map performance results. Records are being broken there regularly. MHD is working on S63TU support so expect to see the bar for this platform raised again shortly.

Thanks Mike! I have a bootmod3 on order now so there's my flash. Eventually I'll work with a dyno tuner to get my own custom tune when I get more stuff like downpipes, exhaust, etc.

Since I've found that the bootmod3 is much easier I've tried to cancel my JB4 order, but it's looking like they may send it anyways so if that's the case I'll just keep it around until I get the itch for methanal... and a new clutch, definitely a new clutch.

can you share the link to the video you found?

I'm in the same boat as you - was considering JB4 stage 3 but it seems like a lot of people use BM3

TheHouseWon
so i get the difference between a piggyback and a true tune
but for BM3 - where do i get the tunes from? once you buy the unit is there a library of changes you can make to your car?

Bootmod3.net > login > select map and load

Or you can do it from your phone with their app.

User manual https://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1546059

Edit: you need an enet cable from eBay or Amazon. The one used to custom code your car.

Thanks yo! Shout out to TheHouseWon! I got my bootmod3 installed with the OTS stage 1 and goddamn my car has some new muscle. Can't wait until I can find the time to get downpipes and try out stage 2. It was so fucking easy to do compared to the JB4 sensor install. I'm sure they work great and maybe one day if I want methanal I'll give them a shout, but for now its bootmod3 all the way!

Good to hear! I highly recommend downpipes with BM3. It's like driving a different beast altogether.

Any pipe brands you recommend? Or possibly just buying OEMs and knocking the converters out?

Ok cool, really appreciate the info. Sorry to keep pestering you, but how loud does it get with no cats but still having the active exhaust? I'm cool with louder, but not like crazy drone every drive loud. I know theres a bootmod3 setting to control the exhaust valve, like open, closed, and auto. maybe that would help give me a choice idk...

I run them Eisenmann Sport and stock mid pipe. No drone and not too loud after cold start delete.

Everytime I drive an F10 with a piggyback, it’s quite evident that something is wrong. Hesitations, inconsistencies and even sporadic audible detonation. My suggestion is to go with any good ECU flash over a piggyback. They simply aren’t suitable for the MEVD 17 ECU. I’ve developed what is perhaps the most advanced piggyback ever made for BMW and even I wouldn’t use it for primary engine tuning duties with the F series BMW. The ECUs are an order of magnitude more sophisticated and adaptive than the Seimens ECUs in the E series.

No drone. Catless DP's, BM3 Stage 2 custom map plus JB4w/BCM etc. Mine has the stock ZCP exhaust and it sounds really good.
