2014 M5 ZCP - my review

I've had my car for a couple weeks now, and I feel I've had time to form an informed and informative opinion; for reference I'm coming out of a 2009 E60 M5 with RPI section 3 exhaust.

PERFORMANCE

This will be news to precisely no-one. The F10 M5 is insane when you lay into it - it pulls like a freight train, and you run out of guts long before the car stops pulling. When you do this with sport plus set for the throttle setting, it opens up the exhaust flaps and you get some really nice noise from it - not sure how much of it is from the artificial noise maker, but it sounds really good, and does some nice burbles and pops between gears - especially with the CP exhaust. In a straight line, there's literally no comparison to the E60 - the wave of torque starts at 1500 and doesn't let up until 7000+. This is a dramatic change from the E60 where you had to get the revs up around 4500 before it started pulling hard. The noise the E60 made - with the RPI - was without question much more enjoyable, but what are you gonna do.

Note the stock tone on the E60 was essentially non existent, so it's not fair to compare the modded exhaust on the E60 with the one on the F10. Many have shown that the F10 can be made to sound very exciting, even exotic, with the right mods. Driving behind Dave (RPiM5) last weekend was awesome!

I had driven the F10 M5 a few times before, but I'm continually surprised how docile the M5 can be when you don't push it - particularly when you leave the various settings in comfort mode. It feels like a nicely appointed Cadillac (I've said Buick a few times as well - same diff really).

But the transmission - oh lord this transmission is amazing. I can't say enough good things about it. The only thing I can compare it to when snapping off gears at WOT is a video racing game. The sound from the motor as it bounces off the limiter in each gear, the associated lightning quick shift into the next gear -- people say they like PDK better but I just can't imagine a better feeling, performing transmission than this one. Of course I've never driven a PDK either. Maybe I just wasn't prepared for a modern transmission to have gotten this good - and the difference is glaring coming out of the E60's SMG. Note I actually like SMG - when shifted manually.

The E60 I drive as if there was no automatic mode; the SMG in auto mode decides to shift at the worst times - even at its most aggressive setting. I'd be dipped half way in, accelerating, and the damn thing would be like, "hey, this is a good time to shift!" and all of a sudden you're waiting like 5s for the damn clutch to reengage as it upshifts. In sharp contrast, the DCT is the best transmission I've ever experienced in a car, and is as perfectly smooth in auto mode as the ZF5HP24 5 speed slushbox in my old 2001 E38 - which I absolutely loved. I had the sport model with the higher stall speed torque convertor - and it was fantastic. Amazingly, this DCT in auto mode is every bit as good and intuitive. I can control it with my foot just perfectly, so even though I like "rowing" the gears, there's no need. I feel like when I take over and shift for it, as is my habit, I'm clumsier about it than the car is in D.

The ride is pretty great - it rides easily over uneven road surfaces, and easily swallows up the bumps. I was a little concerned about going CP with our roads here in the DC area, but it's a non issue. In comfort mode, it's considerably smoother than my E60 was in its softest setting. In sport plus, the ride is firm, but satisfying - maybe not quite as harsh as my E60 was in it's highest setting, but that car was dropped on Eibach springs so the ride harshness was ticked up a notch. The F10 definitely doesn't get unsettled as the suspension on the E60 did in their respective harshest settings. At all times it feels glued to the road regardless of the firmness setting.

The steering was a little bizarre at first - the steering in sport plus is absurdly over weighted. It's surprising initially, but I've gotten used to it and actually prefer the heavy weight now. It doesn't feel that natural - i.e. the weight doesn't feel like it's coming from the stickiness of the tires - feels artificially generated. That said, it's very satisfying to throw the big girl into corners - remaining remarkably flat, with the steering wheel fighting you throug the turn. Feels sort of like an old sports car without power steering -- I've come to enjoy it. If you prefer Buick mode, throw it into the comfort setting and have at it. That feels plenty good as well, especially when the other settings are in sport or sport plus.

However, there's no getting around the fact that there is less feedback in this car than in the E60 - it feels a bit more disconnected/artificial than my E60 did. That said, it's still very capable. I was surprised how quickly I got used to this thing's larger size, and am able to aim it with a very high degree of accuracy into corners, and openings in traffic when zipping around town. When I first drove it, I thought it would take some time to learn to maneuver it around, but when you're on it, it sort of shrinks around you. The lack of body roll is remarkable - no matter what I do, it stays flat like it's on rails - really amazing. There is just no body roll no matter how hard you try. My son noticed this too the other day and remarked about how flat it cornered. That's not the type of thing he'd usually say or notice, so that's something.

Overall I'm very satisfied with the handling/suspension - it's a pretty big improvement over the E60 overall, even if it gave a little up in steering/road feel. Fact is they refined the car a bit more for their target market. Most buyers of this car are looking for the experience it now delivers.

Mileage probably belongs under performance - I have to say, this car is really remarkable. When cruising along at 80mph on the freeway, I can easily get it up to 25mpg, this is with the occasional burst of speed. This info is available on the car's vehicle info->efficient dynamics screen as a bar graph of mph over a recent period of time. Of course, the way I drive, I'm averaging out to around 11, which is 1.5 worse than my E60 was - but it's not fair to compare until after break in. I suspect this will settle around 14 - 15 with my driving style around town - which is mostly where I drive.

INTERIOR

I'm going to come out and say it. I liked the seats in my E60 better. Not only did I have the active bolsters which I sorely miss - I loved having them hold me in place while cornering aggressively - and I enjoyed my passengers' delight when they noticed the car was "hugging" them - but the adjustable range of the seats was better there as well. I like to drive with a bit of a tilt up in my seat - i.e. ass low, legs slightly higher - maybe it's my long legs, but that's how I like it. This seat bottom stops short of being able to tilt back enough for me to find my optimal position. That's not to say it's not comfortable - it is - exceedingly so - but not as comfortable as I was in the E60. I don't get why the range is limited from before, but it is. I'll get used to it - I already have - but it's not an improvement.

Beyond the seats, there is absolutely no comparison. The fit and finish, the ergonomics of the dashboard, the sumptuous silver leather all over (I have full leather), the anthracite wood trim - pure class. The cockpit is just gorgeous and every surface you touch is just fabulous - especially the steering wheel. It feels just fantastic to grip - perfect grip size, leather feel. Love it - it looks great, too; I really like this wheel over the old one which is just too boring - looks like it belongs in a 550 - apologies to '13 owners.

Except. The shift knob is a bit of a disappointment to me. I don't know for sure if the E60 knob was made of aluminum or some other metal, but this one definitely is not - it feels like a hollow piece of plastic, where the one in the E60 had more heft and felt better to snap back and forth to shift gears. This isn't really a bit deal, as I find myself leaving this car in D more and more because it's just so good.

The review from my passengers is also exceedingly positive. My wife didn't like riding in the E60 because it was so raw, and it wasn't easy to drive it slow/smooth. My kids love the new car - hands down - partially because it's new, but also because now they have their own heated seats and climate controls in the back. What are you gonna do - that's the extent of their experience in the car, so who can blame them. They both love the way it looks - but they also loved the E60's looks.

ELECTRONICS

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the 21st century. The new '14 iDrive is fantastic. I'm thankful that BMW moved to the forefront of in-car electronics around 2010, and they have remained there comfortably with continued iterative improvements. The speed of the navigation system, the user interface, the features; the ease of moving through and selecting various audio modes and vehicle settings - it's really amazing. Even more so when you compare it to the systems in the latest offerings from Benz, Audi, etc. I can't say enough about how fantastic this system is. I've even used the touchpad to enter addresses a few times, and it works very well - much better than twirling the idrive knob to find letters. Note we have an '11 X5 in the family with the older iDrive which is also great, but this one has noticeably improved from that one as well - much faster user interface, and slightly nicer graphics.

The iPhone integration is pretty great too - a long press on the voice control button on the steering wheel gives you Siri, whether connected via bluetooth or USB. I have used this more than I thought it would, and it works really well. Since I have the pro kit cradle, it's actually really convenient just to ask Siri where something is and let her take me there using the phone's much maligned navigation; it has always worked great for me. I find myself doing this more than actually looking up addresses in the BMW because I don't always know the address. I wanted to go to Chipotle the other day - my options were to try to dig out where the hell the info might be in the car's navigation info database, or just long press the button. Siri wakes up, I'm like "where's chipotle". She responds "I found a chipotle near you, blah blah, would you like me to take you there?" "Yes." And I'm on my way. Love it.

The BMW connected drive stuff is meh - I don't really care. The phone has equivalent and better functionality than anything in there. I use mostly Pandora in the car, and that works really well with the BMW apps interface up on the nav screen and controlling it via iDrive. I wish more iPhone apps would use that capability - though maybe they do and I just don't know it yet - Yelp, iTunes Radio, etc.

The B&O audio has been reviewed here ad nauseam - needless to say, it sounds fantastic. I'm not a huge audiophile so I can't honestly tell you that its that much better than the DIRAC system in my E60, but it sounds really good, and looks fantastic as well. I bought it because I like having the best audio option available in a car. Sometimes I just like to crank it up and lose myself in the music on a long drive with no distortion, heavy bass, and crystal clear mids and highs - the B&O fits that bill nicely, even it it's pricey at 3500.

I was surprised by the 6-disk changer in the glove compartment - did you guys know that was in there? Who the heck uses CDs anymore? lol - I just copied all my favorite tracks via USB stick onto the car's built in hard drive and have all my favorite music in the car's music collection at all times, at top quality - I encode all my music at 320kbps VBR which is enough for the most detailed music. I know there are people out there who insist on lossless compression but these ears can't tell the difference and frankly I call bullshit on people that say they can - in a car! :P

The surround view cameras are really cool - but will take a bit of getting used to. My wife has this in her X5 and swears by it - she says she's forgotten how to go in reverse without a camera and the green guidelines telling her where she's going. I don't quite trust it yet and still use the mirrors mostly, but I do like having them.

The HUD in this car is much improved over E60 - the HUD is finally adjustable - you can move it up and down, left and right, and rotate it. It is bright and very easy to see. It still disappears with polarized sunglasses though.

What's pretty amazing is the speed limit display - I love having that there - and it presents in the HUD as long as you're not in M-view which is really convenient. What a cool feature!

The other pleasant surprise is the blind spot warning; I think I knew this existed as a feature, but still was pleasantly surprised when the car gave me that little warning triangle in the window when someone was in the blind spot. Very cool.

The only complaint I have with the electronics - and this one annoys on the regular - is the arrangement of the steering wheel buttons. First, they moved the audio controls to the right of the wheel, and the cruise controls from a dedicated stalk to the left of the wheel, shared with the M buttons. This is stupid for a couple reasons - first, the volume knob is not far from the right side of the wheel - there's no reason to even have volume control on the wheel since you can easily reach over to the knob, and it's much more intuitive there. Second, there are no more "next/prev" buttons on the wheel! You have to reach clear over to the right side of the center console to hit the arrows to skip back and forth in your audio source. I know, I know - first world problems - but we are talking about the electronics in a 120k car here - this is a real first world problem! That was a function I used very frequently on my wheel and I miss it.

On the plus side, the scroll wheel is a nice consolation - what a fantastic idea to put a scroll wheel on the steering wheel and easily scroll through your audio source. The only problem is sometimes I'm not looking for a particular song, I just want to skip the one currently playing. If there's a way to do this from the steering wheel, I can't find it, but I digress. The scroll wheel is fantastic, and I love that your song/presets/etc display in the hud while you flick through (unless M view is on, in which case they display in the bottom part of the gauge cluster).

FIT AND FINISH

Thankfully my car (so far, knock on wood) exhibits none of the rattles and creaks you hear many people speak of with the F10 M5. There's no noise from the B&O speaker, no rattles in the B pillars, no clunks from the suspension - the car really does feel like it's "carved from a block of granite" - lol.

CLOSING THOUGHTS

Overall I love this thing. I corrected one of my issues with its appearance this morning by adding 12.5mm spacers all around - I like to have the tires pushed out as far as possible. I just like the appearance that way. Fortunately the spacers didn't impact the ride whatsoever, and there is zero rubbing. I think I will wind up getting new wheels for it - I just can't fall in love with the 601M even though I want to. They look really nice - but they don't do it for me that way. I love to see a hot set of shoes on a hot ride and these aren't quite there.

And finally, here's a decent pic of my beast to complete this review - I'll use the picture of me filling her up in honor of the old girl, the E60 M5, with which you couldn't ever pass a gas station without a fill-up.

Hi Mate,
Which seats do you have ?, the M multi functional ?. I have to say these are the best seats i have ever sat in, and the amount of adjustment is unreal. Thank goodness for the memory seats, as im always fiddling with them. Its taken me a while to find the perfect set up.

Yes I think they're called the M multifunction - they have the active cooling, massage function, adjustable side bolsters, etc. They are good seats - almost as good as the ones I had in my E60 M5..

They're basically the top-line seats which automatically come with the executive package here in the states.

They're not terribly different from my old ones, they just have slightly less range of adjustment, and are slightly less firm, come to think of it, which is a negative imho. The E60 M5 multi function seats are by far the best seats I had ever sat in.

I wonder if this can be coded -- I couldn't care less about the volume buttons on the right side of the wheel. I'd much rather have those be next/prev buttons.

Any coding experts here care to chime in?

The toggle style button on the right side of the steering wheel does this. You toggle up/down through the playlist and press down to play the selected song. As far as I know it requires two actions to skip to the next track though. Is that what you mean?

I actually agree with dhirm5 on the seats. I thought the comfort seats in the E60 were more comfortable and they had active side bolsters too. Like I have stated in some previous reviews I have done, I wish they offered a comfort seat option for the F10 M5, instead of the Sport Seat only.

Otherwise great to hear the thoughts on the new 14' M5.

Dhirm5,

Excellent review - now I'm really interested in hearing the exhaust note of the ZCP. Do you ever to go the local cars & coffees in the MD/DC/VA area? Would be cool to see your azurite monster.

Right - I wasn't clear - the scroll wheel does allow this, but it requires you to engage in selecting a specific next or previous song.

I keep the 'random' setting on and want the car to pick a next song randomly. The only way to get that is the right arrow "next" button.

Yes now I remember this issue. When my car arrives I'm going to do some coding work, if I find a fix for this I will report back.
