Start stop Function

So I'm trying to embrace the SS function but everytime it cuts back on I think that it's costing me more $ than the saving me in fuel. After reading the section in the OM it said that it would cause premature ware. Anybody else concerned that it cost more than the benefit or am I'm off?

I don't use SS as I find it annoying. I'm just not used to a car's engine stopping in heavy traffic or red lights. Also, I'm not convinced the wear and tear on restart off sets the savings in fuel. Perhaps for smaller lighter engines SS fine but IMHO, not good for the 4.4L in the F10 M5.

I'm sure there are benefits, but personally I can't stand the little pause while the start happens again. Annoys the hell out of me. Biggest reason I shut it off.

+1

It doesn't really belong on a car like the M5...they probably only put it on to help with the gas guzzler tax, BMW CAFE ratings and most importantly as a symbolic gesture that BMW is thinking green even in it's performance models....

Mine is turned off. It also remembers the last setting, so it never comes back on. Annoying feature on a car like this. Ok on a 320d, but not an M5

Same here... I leave it off. It was kinda cool at first and to be able to say it has somewhat of an efficiency mode though it got annoying real fast.

I guess I'm the Black Sheep here. I use it all the time, but only whenever I am in D mode. Which is about 20-30% of the time I drive the M5. I personally like it, and can say to people, see it even has all this fuel efficient technology even though my M5 sounds like death and destruction. Lol!

I have yet to use it as I refuse to use it while performing my break-in.

@RPiM5 since you use it a lot here is a tip. With the auto start/stop system engaged, you can "tell it" to not perform its duty (turn engine off) upon your next stop. All you need to do is jab the brake pedal (give it a quick pump immediately after you come to a halt) and the system will not engage for that stop. You can do this on a stop by stop basis.

If you have an AMG (or have driven an AMG) and have used the brake hold feature, then you will pick it up easily.

BTW, I have not tried this yet. I just know about it.

I found SS pretty impressive when I had a 335i loaner since the engine restarted almost instantaneously and noticeably quicker than in my M5. I assume this was due to the 335's smaller displacement. The only thing I find bothersome about SS is that in pedestrian areas I am worried people will hear my car restart and think I stalled a manual. I doubt many people are aware of SS features on cars.

I have been keeping this on but more out of stubbornness.

In the mt if the traffic light suddenly turns green it is very hard to launch smoothly. I have to anticipate the light turning green and give it a few seconds before launching or else I am bucking like a 16yo driving his gremlin for the first time. Still trying to get this smoother ha

Never use it .......tried it, and I really see little value in fuel savings when I drive the way I do fast(: Just picked up a 2013 991 S, and it has the same damn thing which I have not used. So Porsche is doing the same thing, but no guzzler tax on the Porsche.

also interesting is that in this 328 loaner I am driving there is a 2 second delay before auto stop kicks in. in the mt it seems to kick in as soon as you come to a stop in neutral so it seems slightly less invasive in the AT cars. ..
