I was rear-ended but did you know?

I was involved in a rear end collision in which the other driver hit my M5. I was unaware of this fact until I took her to the dealership. The headrest pops out to minimize whiplash injury (see picture). Awesome safety feature!

Wow.. Is that standard feature for f10 m5?

Ouch... But i think it's an easy job to fix it. It's just the rear bumper section, so no worry that anything inside might get damage.

Damn. Sorry to hear man. That headrest looks crazy. Another thing the F80 M3 doesn't have.

First of all glad to see you are ok!
Then this is another reason why M5/M6 are heavy!!!!
Lots of safety features like this...
Those who complain and wish to have a lot lighter car, must appreciate the "heaviness"

Yes it's standard for US version and that's why the European versions (M5/M6) have different seats with no headrest like this...

Glad you are ok.... as for the damage, I have seen lighter that caused the car to get a frame damage assignment. Once they get underneath and inside they can better assess it.

make sure to get loss of value compensation since this will hurt you on resale or trade in unless you are leasing.

It should be a standard safety feature. There's a mechanism that needs to be replaced if it pops. It can only deploy once. It's like 300 or 400$ if I remember correctly.

Glad you're okay OP. M5 is a tank!

Vic, yeah that is what the dealer / body shop said. In fact, they opened the trunk and peeled off the rubber trim and noticed "crinkling" of the metal in some areas, which the rep said was indicative of frame damage. However, they won't know the full damage until the insurance adjuster comes in and they take the bumper off and assess everything. The rep said the car will be in the shop for AT LEAST 30 days. Ughhhhh

More details to follow.

Sorry man.

Very cool about the headrests, however. Thanks for sharing.

easier said than done.

i was rear ended inmy m5 back in november, and neither my insurance company or the other party's will take responsibility. they basically say that since my vehicle was repaired back to the manufacturer's standards, there is no diminished value!!

and there wouldnt be any anyway until you sell the vehicle, which is hard to do when its been in an accident (was a $24,000 claim).

have had to drop my asking price from $88,000 to now down to $74,500. and still havent managed to sell it even at this price.

i paid ~ $126,000 new and car now has 23,000 km's (14,000 miles) on t.

Well I agree that the car was restored back to manufacturers standards and this is what I said when I traded my 535i in. However, the CARFAX report shows that the airbag was deployed and BMW won't certify the car so therefore it's wholesaled. Even if I sold it myself, somebody would complain about the airbag shit so the rule is, don't get run into if you can help it. I couldn't and neither could you so we got screwed by this little diminished value game.

Best thing you could do is just keep the car. I should have kept mine but I don't have a good place to park it.

i know i should keep it but i just dont want it. lol.

ill probably end up selling it at a huge loss. but when i do im definitely going after the other insurance company.

I went through this back in '05. It is possible to get diminished value. I would suggest you have the car appraised with full disclosure of the damage. Then, ask what the value would be without the damage. [By the way, you have to get it from the responsible's party insurance company. You're company won't pay you out on diminished value.]

I had an independent appraiser do one and I had my dealership put on letter head what they would offer (since the damage on my M3 was over $25k).

It took a while, about a year, but if you are persistent you will get it. I'm in the insurance industry, so I pushed the right buttons (like threatening to involve the state insurance commissioner) to get things moving along when they were stalling.

Strangely, the incident never showed up on Carfax.
