Actually you would pass the Tesla easily On the ramp. The car corners like a family sedan. That's where I almost lost control during my test drive.

Will be extremely interesting to see the mods and tuning available for electric cars. Could be insane performance (until the batteries run down).

Yeah it does have crummy eco tires and isn't sport oriented in the least bit. I give Tesla props. Should be a nice replacement for the Lexus

I doubt it has the same track capability as the M5, though. But how many owners honestly take their M5 to the track? It's not much of a track car tbh. Too much of a fatty.
Sorry mate. I've driven the Tesla, I've bought the Tesla, but it cannot accelerate as quickly as my M5.

Also the Tesla is RWD not AWD, and it lacks our trick differential so it struggles to get the power down effectively.

acceleration aside, the model s has:
no power folding side mirrors, less comfortable seats with fewer adjustment options, the back seat headrests are a joke, you have to get into some ridiculous subscreens just to open the moonroof, stock tires on performance package are 245s, you have to slam the doors to close them. all these I observed after just 5 minutes in the car.

overall a great initial offering but in every regard-- performAnce, convenience, comfort-- no comparison to the M5.

Tesla Model S vs M5 video automobile magazine race

Anybody else pissed off about this moron saying Tesla beats M5 after the M5 driver clearly sucked ballz at driving this? Such BS.

First of all this is old and there is already a multi page thread on this if you bother to search.

Second, there is now plenty of data from dragtimes.
- Tesla Model S best 1/4 mile stock - 12.371
- 2013 BMW M5 best 1/4 mile stock - 11.633

+1. Seriously.

I've got nothing against the "batt" mobiles on the market. In fact, I want them to be successful but the hype gets annoying. I've had a few colleagues talk up the Tesla S and I too talk favorably about the car, its technology and the future of batt mobiles. Inevitably someone brings up performance and makes the M5 comparison. I always give props to the Tesla S's performance for what it is but I will not concede that it bests the M5 in any way other than fuel mileage. Most guys get it, some insist there is this video or they read something, they rode in one, etc, etc... I tell them bench racing is mildly interesting but if anyone actually wants to race my M5 with their Tesla S, bring it!!!

With data going out to 3 decimals, Im sure you have go to sources for both of these. Not trying to make you do more work, just want something I can show a non-believing friend. Heck all I really want is someone to recreate this video with a properly driven M5.

He cited his source as dragtimes.com - you can see actual timeslips from real vehicles there. That's why his data is so accurate.

I test drove a Model S before buying my M5 and was expecting to be blown away but I wasn't. I think that's because I was comparing it to my E92 M3 and frankly, the Tesla just didn't feel any faster. This was confirmed by my 15 year old son who was in the back seat. When the test drive was over he asked me if I was sure that our test car was the performance model (it was) and he complained bitterly about the lack of exhaust sound! My M5 is definitely faster than the P85. Just look at the 1/4 mile trap speeds - no Tesla has come anywhere close to 120+ mph. Also the M5's cabin is in another league altogether. I am very happy to have chosen the M5 over the Tesla (and yes that video does piss me off a little - the Tesla crowd had a field day with it).

I still need to test drive one, but I think the center screen entertainment system is awesome. Would love that setup in the M5.

Except that with few hard buttons you must look at the display to touch and input

I have a new Tesla Model S P85 and also a 2013 F10 M5. Both cars are awesome in their own right. I primarily use the Tesla for commuting since the carpool lane access is key for me. The Tesla's torque is addicting and immediate. I've driven these cars back to back numerous times and will say the Tesla is "about" as quick or slightly quicker stoplight to stoplight. If you don't get the launch control just right - the P85 Tesla will beat you every time from a stoplight. Keep in mind it has to be the P85 version with the high performance inverter. Certainly, the M5 is much more fun on a curvy road or a track. It was incredible on Laguna Seca and the exhaust note sounds sweet.

All in all, both cars are incredible and I love them both in their own way.

Model S is a good car. Not great, just good. I love mine and like Spot, use it for commuting. I opted for the P85+ model, with the "+" basically being enhanced suspension, slightly fatter tires, and some stiffer sway bars.

In comparison to my old M5, they are in different leagues. Yes, Model S is quick. Straight-line acceleration is great and instant torque at every speed is awesome. But that's where the fun ends. The seats have absolutely minimal side support. Controlling the car at higher speed takes much effort. The steering is precise, but very numb, even in the Sport setting.

The interior is woefully sparse compared to what I'm used to. The cupholders and armrests seem like an afterthought. Cheap plastic exists everywhere, including some sharp bits. My husband hates driving in it because something constantly jabs his leg.

While the 17" touchscreen is fairly impressive, it is maddeningly frustrating to use, especially while driving. The car has NO iPod compatibility - it just charges when you plug in. The media player won't do shuffle or random. It does not respect album art in your library, and instead goes out over the Internet to find it. If you load up a USB stick with lots of artists and playlists, the playlists get ignored. This makes it incredibly difficult to actually listen to continuous music. The interface is gorgeous, but frankly it really, really sucks on a day-to-day basis.

Navigation is also terrible, and maps are "north up" only - no direction of travel or 3D perspective view. The navigation is a combined Google and Navigon system, with Navigon graphics (which surprisingly have 3D and direction of travel mode) showing up in the instrument cluster. Sometimes, they disagree.

There are also so many other odd things with this car. Every bulb is LED, except the license plate lamps. The headlamps are just HID with no adaptive cornering feature. No parking sensors (on mine - they just became an option right after I took delivery.) The rearview camera has no trajectory lines or 3D overlay.

Tesla also just raised prices somewhat egregiously. My car today would cost a new buyer $13K more than it did 2 months ago.

What I do enjoy is the sound system. It's pretty great when you get the upgraded version. The panoramic roof is also pretty cool. And, I think all performance cars should have adjustable air suspensions.

But... that said... I miss many of the features I had in the M5, and that's what swayed me to get the M6. It won't be a commute car, but will allow me to enjoy spirited drives on the weekend. Model S just doesn't do that. I'm glad it beat a few M5's, but it is NOT a strong contender for where it really counts.
