Ok so I went gold level cps.

Suggest I send the lens in for repair right away or estimate (not a 3 day turn around)?

Got a MFA question. How far off is too far? My brand new 85 f1.8 was simply not hitting the focus point. Last night at an awards ceremony I had to switch to the 135L and stand in the back of the room. The images from the 85 weren't even looking sharp on the LCD, so I knew they'd be crap on the laptop. Today I set up a jerry-rigged MFA session in our hotel room and managed to dial in the 85 to what seems to be a sharp focus. But it's an adjustment of -6. Is that acceptable (assuming it really is now hitting focus)? Or should I send it in to Canon for calibration?

If you can get it to focus sharp in your body, I bet Canon will respond that if "falls within specifications".
At least you can MA, I cannot and it sucks.

If it's within the adjustment range, then you're ok. Each camera/lens combination will be different. Also, be sure to adjust for your TC/lens combinations (assuming you're using Canon TCs that'll identify themselves to the camera).

perfectly small. a new body cap.
wouldn't dare try to use it for video, not because of the noise, but the form factor does not allow my focusing methods.

Canon says:
STM - Continuous Autofocus for Shooting Video
So why not give it a try?

same reason I wouldn't dare use the 85/1.2 for video: it's focus-by-wire.
it's also audible, unlike USM L glass.
it also way too small to wrap fingers around it to pull focus. and impossible to use a follow-focus that doesn't have a reversible gear mount so that the crank clears the body.
but all of these are mute points compared to the focus-by-wire issue.

also, I truly believe that the STM moniker is a marketing ploy forthe entry consumer using the Rebels to shoot video an photos of their kids. the new rebel can autofocus in video mode with the new STM. it's not aimed at pros. and this lens is not a pro lens.

You may be right about the marketing gimic, but I was thinking that we'd see video AF migrate to the pro-sumer level, like the 5D3 and the 7D2.

If it were smooth and accurate, it'd be a boon for some scenes. That's a big IF, I realize.

Canon confirmed that there won't be continuous auto-focus for the 5D3. It was confirmed with the release of the newest firmware that added support for the 40mm.

I think it's hard to realize for anyone who does not shoot video professionally, that autofocus for video is not welcomed, needed or desired.
