My New M5

Hi All

Just put deposit down on my new M5. Just had new discs and pads all round, full BMW warranty, 2 owners, FBMWSH, 42,000 miles, £29,995 from main BMW dealer.

https://ibb.co/cmnrTS

Thing is - and I have raised it with them to check, but when I took it for a test drive, I dropped to around 50 mph, in manual, S1, floored it, and it went up to 90mph quickly - but I was disappointed it was not "neck ripping" acceleration. Almost like it didn't feel I was being pushed back that hard, (probably similar to a 530d) albeit the speedo clearly showed it was.....Kind of like being in an A380 when it accelerates down the runway.

I'm probably being paranoid, expecting too much, not using right gearbox setting, but how quick "should" it feel? in that set up - if indeed anyone can answer such a subjective question. I had to ease off as I was reaching a car in front but didn't reach over 5,000 rpm..

Maybe the car comes to life after 5k? They have said they will check everything but I want to buy a car which is a few hundred bhp off what it should be.

Had salesman and girlfriend on car so couldn't drive it that hard, and it was wet.

Thanks
Rob

What do you mean with "neck ripping" ?
Which gear you were at 50 mph? and which gear your were at 90 mph?
Basically the right gear to have maximum acceleration is to be at second gear and shift it up at 70 mph (red line)...better acceleration will be achieved by sport+ engine and S3 DCT setting

Deffo TC kicking in and stopping all the fun. They don't feel that fast in the wet as you cant get all the power down. Also depends hugely on the rear tyres fitted to the car.

Getting max power down in the wet takes a bit of doing and in lower gears is more or less impossible

Im sure theres nothing wrong with it
All bmws are smooth and the power is deceiving
I find all test drives underwhelming unless
Its a ferrari!
It must be being in infamilar surroundings that dull the senses

This car needs the right conditions and settings to provide the acceleration the car is famous for.

This is not a GTR which can wow you almost anywhere.

When I first bought the car I was also unimpressed but that was because I was in third gear around 60 mph.

You need to be in S3, throttle sport plus, tires and road at least 70+ degrees - Floor it and I mean stab the throttle and hold it and tell me that isn’t impressive from a luxury saloon.

With the right tires you can make better forward progress than 99.99% of those on the road. That should suffice until warmer weather comes.

I’m still learning new stuff about the car and I’ve had it for 6000 miles now.

Well I have done around 400 miles in the car, and I have no idea what I was on about before...It's exceptionally fast, amazing!! Love it in S3, full throttle

I totally agree with some of the comments above. I felt the same way the first few times I put the hammer down from a stop in first gear, it just didn't "feel" that fast even though the speedo was showing that I was going way faster than I should've been! This has a lot to do with this being a RWD car, so don't expect it to be like a Tesla or AMG 4Matic where you can floor it and get traction right away for that "neck ripping" acceleration that you were referring to. The other issue has to do with you not exceeding 5000RPM, the car is only at roughly 400hp at that RPM, so there's definitely still a lot more grunt available that you didn't get a chance to use.
