BMW to phase out Combustion Engines in 10 years?
I think I may have just died a little.
I hope this not true. What will this mean for M Division then?? http://jalopnik.com/bmw-to-phase-out...ium=socialflow

Actually the U.S. has been producing more oil domestically for some time now. There are still HUGE untapped reserves in Alaska too.
It's probably the EU and the U.S.'s demand for higher and higher fuel efficient vehicles in the future that would drive BMW's move away from IC Engines. This lends massive credibility to the video that Jeremy Clarkson made a couple of years ago concerning the V12 Aston Vantage. Saying that "I just have this horrible, dreadful, feeling that what I'm driving here is an ending."

I think its great. I love the experience of the electric power delivery. As long as range and refueling time issues can be addressed and 10 years is a long time.

I actually agree with you. I honestly would be pretty excited to own an i3 just as long as I get to keep my M5 too. I almost couldn't care less if all of the regular BMW's went with some sort of non ICE drivetrain, but the M Division needs to keep making them, or I will go elsewhere for my racing car needs. It seems like all of the engines that BMW makes today are so quiet anyways, even the N63tu engine, and I would never try to put an exhaust on an N20 engine, there would be no point. This does make wonder a lot about the engine setup in the next M5/M6 though.

surely we can continue to make bioethanol fuel from low end wheat, sugar beet, corn crop etc... wouldn't they still need a combustion engine for that type of fuel? excuse my ignorance...
I have invested interest in a plant in Virginia...

But I also feel that electric will deliver an exciting performance automobile which will be different. Personally I would trade my petrol M5 for an electric M5 today if the electric M5 was faster.

The i8 has me very intrigued and somewhat hopeful about how the future for sports oriented cars could be. Ten more years of technological advances may yet give us fun cars that we as M drivers want.

Sad news of the day. Oh well, by then might we all as well, just buy Lambos and live happily ever after coz they seem to be in no mood to retreat. I, for one, wouldn't mind that ;-)

I agree with you. I think hybrid Ms are the future in the next 10 years, but not totally electric. Unless battery tech gets up to speed. Hopefully, this will includ a better quality interior than the i8 though. I get the space age light weight tech with the build, but they need to come up with a space age interior.
