Next to my 500mm, my 70-200mm f/4L IS is my fave. Its IQ is right there with the 500mm. After lugging the 500mm around (it's a fave due to results, not convenience), anything else seems light and handy, but the 70-200mm is indeed compact and handy. Also, I keep the 1.4x TC on it most of the time and still have good AF response and great utility.

Were you able to get the 100-400 at the 15% off refurb price? If so you got a killer deal. I was monitoring all the high end lenses during the sale and the only one I saw pop into stock (briefly) was the 85/1.2L. While a great lens, sadly, this just wasn't one I wanted so no new lenses for me this time. If a 16-35II had come up, though, I'd have been all over it.

That's cool. Perhaps I'll get a 1.4x TC in the future when I get a FF camera body, but for now, this will probably be good enough. I just sold my older telephoto yesterday... now I just need someone to bite on my 100mm f/2.8 macro and the 50mm f/1.8 II.

Yes, I was able to get it during the sale. If you're interested in it, just let me know, and I'll pass those savings onto you.

Wow, 15% off the refurb price for an effectively new 100-400 is a great deal and I do appreciate the generous offer, but I just don't need the lens right now. Anyone else thinking about it should jump on this.

I thought this was somewhat humorous (especially since you can rent it for a week)...

i would do it if i had enough lenses.

if you can't have fun with things you buy, then what's the point.

Anytime someone shows interest in my gear, i'll hand them one of my two cameras and tell them to take a few shots and see how they like it.

It's inevitable to get some damage on a lens at some point in it's life, so why worry about it. just go with the flow, and if an opportunity for a game of chess comes up, play it

For those of you who are professional photogs, or are into video stuff... how do you back up all your stuff? Especially for video editing, capture, etc it seems like you would require a lot of bandwidth, speed, and space. Just curious what your storage schemes are...

Ooh, um, yeah...backups. I started a scheme where I'd plug an external drive into my laptop and back up everything. Let's see, that was January 2010 or so. I should probably do it again, eh?

hehe... the only reason I was wondering, is because we're building this custom high-end backup server for a client (not photography related). I figured most people here are backing up to an external USB drive, or maybe even a NAS, etc.

1TB pocket with all the files and matching on the HD of the desktop.
Out of some 15k photos only ~50 were ever printed

I backup to multiple 1TB USB drives and their redundant backups of the same kind.
why USB? because it's cheap when you have to buy tons of them and I don't mind setting stuff up for backup while I sleep. don't need the speed/bandwidth. when I'm working, I put the current project (or two or three) on a couple 500GB firewire800 mini drives. and then I can edit anywhere I go.

Gary, do you find it useful to have the lens hood on that lens?

I've got two, 2TB external LaCie drives that take Firewire 800. One is at the house and the other is at the office. I keep one copy of the files on my computer HD until I've copied them to both external HDs.

If I were setting up today I'd look for USB 3.0 which is faster than Firewire. DON'T get USB 2.0 if you're going to be dealing in GB and TB. Rodi may have time and patience, but your client will be pissed at the slow performance.

Firewire is not common on PC, but a PCI card to add it only costs like 20-bucks. USB 3.0 is still uncommon, but if you're starting from the ground up, then you should look for it, unless the data library size is modest. I forget the specs, but USB 3.0 is incredibly fast.

My RAW files are 20 to 30MB each, so it's easy to accumulate several GB per week.
