I really do not get why people seem to conclude that big cars must have automatic or DTC transmission and that only small cars should have manual transmission. If that were the case then all the big buses, trucks, big rigs, etc. should be running with automatic transmission which is not the case as I see so many of those humongous vehicles having manual.

Oh I am sure a manual big rig can accelerate much faster and better than an automatic big rig. You have to compare apples to apples not apples to elephants!

I have to disagree here, as in previous posts, the 6MT has been developed in parallel with the DCT -- also, you have to know that DCT is technically manual shifting though the actual shifting is not done by the operator, the operator merely tells the M5 that he wants to either up or low shift.
Variety is the spice of life so I respect your opinion but although 6mt may have been co developed with the DCT, it was more for emotional reasons and to appease those who think you can't have a sporty car without a manual clutch. Again, my opinion. When trying to optimize performance and efficiency, I think the DCT is the way to go with the F10 and why it is so for the rest of the world.
Remember I have my approx 650bhp 6mt in my driveway (next to
My F10 soon'ish) so won't be missing anything when I have the need to shift. :-)

All the above points fair and valid... as for me, went through all the emotions and settled on DCT... and yes, all my cars up until now (including the M3 i currently drive) have been manual..

I hate my wife.

She laid down the gauntlet today.

She want to drive on autobahn during ED. So i have been forced to get DCT.

I am so pissed.

Jury is out until someone on here drives the manual. Ordered DCT

I don't really know why BMW hasn't allowed a journo to drive a manual equiped M5.

I ended up changing from manual to DCT. Ultimately, I realized that for me the advantages of the DCT outweigh its disadvantages when compared to the manual.

Also, it will give me something new to play with after driving manual for 30 years. The manual would just be the same old stuff for me. Been there done that, and DCT technology is so good these days that I'm not sure why I would want to go old school on this anymore.

I put my name in for a manual M5. Am I the only one?

After reading the Road and Track article comparing the manual M5 to the CTSV, I decided to go stick. Anyone else?

Will do on the review. Should have mine some time middle of next month, and once I have a few days with it I'll let everyone know what I think.

Congrats, I was unaware of the Road & track article as I don't read many American car mags. Really, looking forward to your thoughts.

Krispy
Is that the story you are telling your wife?
It would appear with a 9/12 ED you would be the first ED to go into production! Maybe due to color?

Just teach her to drive stick in the meantime. Getting enough competence to cruise in a straight line even at very high speeds isn't terribly difficult. You've got plenty of time before your ED trip.

And yes, thank God you got to keep 6MT. I think it a bit unreasonable of your wife to expect you to switch the transmission on a car you'll own for years just so she can drive it a couple times during ED. I would have said, "Fine, we'll rent an M5 over there that you can drive on the autobahn," since you actually can do that over there.
