Front Brake Pad change procedure

Why did you disconnect the brake hose? Necessary?

It was necessary for me because I had stainless steel end lines (aftermarket) so they were not long enough to get the calipers off the studs without disconnecting. The new design of the brake pads with the weights on the back of the brake pads would not slide in without taking the calipers off. I think I covered all of this, but restating if I didn't.

Waking up this thread because I'm interested in replacing my front brake pads myself. In fact, I bought a set of CarboTech 1521's and PowerStop Z17's. The price of the PowerStop pads was ridiculously low so I couldn't resist.

My goal with both sets is to reduce brake dust as compared to the stock set without sacrificing performance and feel.

I've changed brakes/rotors on many of my cars in the past but this would be my first shot at doing a BMW let alone a M5.

So here are my questions.

What tools do I need?
What parts will I need if any?
What special details do I need to know?

Just had Z17's installed on the Front and have no complaints; had cool carbons before and they were good as well. Minimal brake dust and good bite when braking.

After switching pads from older stock pads without the anti-vibration weights, I found the procedure is a little different.

While the old pads would easily slide out towards the front, the new ones will not fit due to the increased overall width so you must unclip the brake line retainers (2) and then shimmy the caliper off the mounting studs while being sure not to put too much stress on the brake line.

Once the caliper is off, it is surprisingly light and I was able to hold it one one hand, install the new pads and then reinstall the caliper. Don't forget the reattach the brake line retainers.

Does anyone know where to order cool carbon front brake pads for the M5? ECS doesn't sell them anymore and so doesn't EAS. I've read they do not cause any brake squeal and that's why I wanted to get them. Is there any other brand that doesn't squeal? I don't track my car.

Just changed the front and rear brake pads last weekend. Piece of cake. No need to unplug the brake lines. There' enough room if you unplug some of the wires from the holders
