Valet Parking....part 2 back to Mastros

Well guys, I went back to Mastros for a business meeting the other night and drove up and the young man walked up and opened my door....i got out greeted him and gave him a $20 bill and he said "dont worry sir i will take good care of your car..." i said thank you my good friend, and as i walked away i peered over my shoulder and watched as he carefully backed it up to the front spot in between the new corvette and Bentley. Very nice. when i was done with my dinner (great steak by the way) i walked out and the same young man was there and carefully pulled the beast up and opened the rear door, helped me with my sports coat and hung it up on the rear back seat hanger, and commented on what a beautiful car the M5 is. I spotted him another 20 and shook his hand and thanked him for taking care of the car. Great valet experience.... I think now i learned a great lesson since my prior valet experience a week ago....and that is ..... at high end hotels and restaurants the valet guys know the difference between the toyotas, VWs, GTR, Corvette, Lambos, M5 etc. and to give them a nice tip on the front end, shake their hand, give them some respect and thanking them in advance for taking care of your car will score lots of points and they will treat you right,,,
I this helps some of you, who like me a week ago had serious reservations in letting my car go through valet parking. blessings my fellow M'ers.

In the Netherlands valet parking is very rare (practically nowhere) and we only tip in bars and restaurants (generally speaking) so what amazes me is $ 40,- for parking during dinner?!?!?

Same here, and I believe most of Europe.

While we don't get your valet problems (interesting that a luxury such as valeting is supposed to be is now something owners of expensive cars want to avoid...) there are some social benefits to the US system

On my travels in the US I have noticed that you have much more people working with jobs like valeting etc, jobs that doesn't exist in Europe in the same way. By having for instance valet parking your system creates a lot of jobs, low wage jobs yes, but a welcome job for a student or someone without education etc. With our high minimum wage policies, not many restaurants could afford to have a full valet service. Most restaurants doesn't even have their own parking lot, or could afford to hire one... So we just park somewhere and pay the parking fee (meter) and walk to the restaurant.

Even at one of my relatives retirement/assisted living centre in Palo Alto (CA) they did valet parking... He was a very famous name in the IT industry in the 70'ies to the 90'ies (both at IBM and with his own company competing with IBM) so perhaps their retirement home is a bit over the normal std...

OP- you handled the dreaded valet situation well. At least you have made the adjustment! I'm still entirely too anal retentive to do the same. I'll just continue to do one of these four: (in no particular order)
1. Park far enough (and safely) away that I can do it myself.
2. Do the same thing you did but still park it myself (valet hopefully keeps me up front)
3. Drive another of my cars and let them "valet" it
4. Go to a restaurant where I don't have to worry about the previous three...

$40 is a small price to pay for peace of mind knowing your car is watched over and taken care of, IMHO. thats just me on a $100k+ vehicle.

Here in the uk, this type of parking largely doe's not exist so we take our chances, but park sensible away from others were possible.
This has worked for me so far.

I was visiting in Miami over the weekend and was sitting outside at a restaurant with high end clients and cars. Guy pulls up in his Bugatti Veyron and lets the valet park it. This is after several Lamborghini's and Ferarri's pull up and do the same thing. I think it's all your perspective.
Having said that, I agree with you. I typically ask them to let me park it myself when I pull up in the Porsche, but I do reluctantly let them park the M5.
BTW, there were no M5's in the parking lot at that restaurant. Lol

So the guys driving Toyotas and VW's should get less preferential treatment than you only because you drive the more expensive car? Maybe they saved up their pennies from their hard earned money to buy the car that they can afford, just like you did, and in no right should their cars be treated anyway less than you, or should they?? I believe everybody's personal property should be respected regardless of it's cost or perception to others.
