Busted axle

Well.. I've had my baby for a about a month and now she's in the shop for a few weeks. The other night I used launch control (not the first time) and launched successfully (or so I thought). After a few seconds, there was a huge grinding noise from the rear, and the engine started revving like it was in N, but the car wasn't moving. Luckily I was only a few minutes from my home and had to limp home in 1st gear under 20kmh watching my rpms. Above 3000 or so it would start rattling heavily and the car would stop moving (like I wasn't in gear). I had to get it towed to a dealership the next day. I just fond out I busted a CV joint and the rear axle came loose. 10 days for parts to come in from Germany.

I guess there was so march torque from LC that it put so much stress on the joint that it broke.

Only my 3rd time in 30 days. My vehicle was bought as a demo so maybe the previous driver (BMW exec) screwed up it up somehow. Oh well, it's a lease and under warranty. I'm driving a 528 loaner now. Completely different vehicle

Lol 528 definitely not an M car. Hope they get you back into your car soon.... Depression may be a side effect. If you find yourself thinking of suicide stop driving the 528 immediately and call your dealer for an update, as these thoughts may lead to death or serious injury.

Sorry for your hassle, but it will be interesting to see how the drivetrain holds up when/if people get serious about 1/4 mile times with big sticky slicks. As nice as the stock rubber is for road use, they don't offer nearly the launch capability of slicks.

LC is so violent even on my m3 which has oodles less torque than the m5 that it makes me cringe to use it. I used it once and never again. I get as much of a grin flooring it through 2nd gear and it is way less stress on the rear end and chassis. I think avoiding dead stop LC launches is a good idea

Agreed, whats the point?, who cares if you get 0.5 of a second down the road
POINTLESS in road use.

I hope they get it fixed asap for you. I will be going back for some minor warranty repair next week too. (The plastic piece around the A/C vents in the back cracked)

Whats scary it's not suppose to break! Hate to see this happen on a car out of warranty which would cost a bazillion dollars to repair.

That really should not of happened. Doesn't matter how many times you use LC.

However, one thing I refuse to do is purchase a demo car. I don't even like it if any new car I order comes in with more than 5-10 miles on it. Normally when I first get into any new BMW they always have under 3 miles. My E60 had just 1 mile and that made me very happy.

I just like to break in my car the right way and trust no one. How could I when its hard enough for me to resist during break-in.

Update: part still hasn't arrived. They *think* it's still in customs. I'm not very happy right now and have called BMWFS to see if I can get a month's lease payment credited as I'm driving a service loaner now.

Your dealer can facilitate this for you. Just ask. It's been done plenty. They did it for me on my X6 and it was unsolicited. A good relationship with your dealer is priceless.

If you don't care about breaking in the car, then sure whats the difference.

If you care about break-in, different story.

Exec cars are even more risky. For instance the cars they use at the M Performance School are sold as "Exec Cars".

One of my favorite Seinfeld scenes. Around 1:35: "yeah, you better give me the insurance because I am going to beat the hell out of this car".

My father - cheapo that he is - was looking at buying a "pre-owned" car that had been in a rental fleet. That is, until I showed him this clip.

Demos have a tough life from the get-go. Some of the ones I've been out in have been thrashed from ice cold (by the dealer, of course, rather than by me). I wouldn't buy one, but some are much more laid back (if the price is right).

Last week I hit a roadbump pretty hard, busted 2 left wheels and had also a grinding noise from behind. I now have an order for 2 new wheels, although they are drivable now they are bumpy.

The grinding noise left however. When I hit the bump there was a grinding noise, then I stoppend and checked the car,it sounded like I was dragging something or some part came lose and grinds the road but there was nothing to see. When I drove on the grinding noise was gone and it has not showed up since.

Should I be worried that I still have some half busted axles ?
