Wheel alignment procedure

My BMW service advisor tells me wheel alignment can only be done with tires and wheels on the car.
Really? I've only seen wheel alignments done with the sensors bolted up to the car with wheels off.
Does anyone have definative insight on BMW procedures?

The vast majority of alignment machines are designed to be made with the wheels/tyres on as opposed to just bolting up to the hubs iirc.
