Tons of Threads on Burning Oil But None on Solutions?

As everyone has noticed there are tons of threads on burning oil but not one of them gives an answer. My car also burns oil ALOT, 1 quart of 5W30 every 600 miles.

Has anyone gone to service and gotten a fix for this problem yet?

PLEASE don't put the 5W-30 oil, go to a BMW dealership and pick up the Castrol 10W-60 oil!

I hope your kidding, because the new Twin Turbo M's require 5W30 as stated in all the oil threads on this forum and in the cars handbook itself. However I'm not asking about what kind of oil to use but instead wondering if anyone with the same problem as me has found a solution.

Never mind LOL I was just picking up some oil (for the same reason) for my E92 M3 and the SA told me "All ///M's take Castrol 10W-60 oil!!!". That shows how some SA's don't know it all!

I'm wondering the same thing as I have 2 bottles of extra oil always sitting in the trunk. I didn't realize these are 2 stroke engines. lol

That oil consumption is excessive, indicating something is not right with the engine. I'd take it to the dealership and have them check for leaks and do a compression test. I'd want to know what the number is.

To keep oil consumption down, the break-in is absolutely critical. You want to run the car at a number of different speeds, rpms and gears in the first 2,000 miles. You do not want to go full load/throttle or above 4,000 rpm for this time. Wherever possible, you want to avoid cold starts as much as possible, so try not to take a lot of short trips where the car sits overnight. I always plan a long drive on the backroads when I pickup a new car (500 miles or more). You absolutely want to change the oil at 2,000 miles or so. There is all sorts of crap in the oil at this point, and when you go F.T. and high rpm, you don't want a bunch of metal particles in the oil. Once you hit the 2,000 miles and changed the oil, gradually work up to F.T. and max rpm over the next few hundred miles.

If you break the car in this way, you will burn the minimum amount of oil. I've put over 100,000 miles on my E60 M5 along with many track days, and it used 1 liter/5,000 miles consistently it's whole life. My Porsche was broken in the same way, and since I haven't tracked it or driven it quite as hard as I did the M5, I'm using less than 1 liter/10,000 miles.

for mine, 1st 8,000km or 5,000 miles ... I do 1 qt for every 1,000km or 600 miles. Since then, I am doing 1 qt for every 1,600km or 1,000 miles.

In comparison to my old 2011 550, I did 1 qt for every 5,000km or 3,000 miles (on average).

I think it has to be something to do with driver usage pattern. I have owned an N63 and an S63TU and in both cases I have virtually no oil usage. It would be 20k miles before I need to add a quart on my car. And on the N63 it was even less usage.

There are many who would contradict this break in method.

I broke my car in exactly as I was supposed to but it still burns a ton of oil. I just don't wanna go to service with this and have them take apart my whole car looking for an answer (we all know they never put it back toghether as well as it was), but it seems I have no choice.

If your car is producing full power and you notice no ill effects from the exhaust, e.g. oil smoke, I would just wait to get more miles on the car and see if the oil usage trails off. The last thing I'd do is have a dealership tear down the engine just because its using a litre of oil every 1K miles and is running great. YMMV.

The F10 M5 and F12/F13 M6 are known to burn more oil than previous M's. But for comparison, I have a bit over 5,000 miles on my M6, and have only had to put in 2 quarts of oil over that period. Every 600 miles does seem out of the norm from the other responses I have read. Also, it seems from these other responses that oil consumption goes down with more miles on the car. Just my 2 cents.

My M6 is just getting a little better now, it was at 1200, 2000, 4000, and 7200 was just my last fill up.

The car feels like its running well feels like its making full power and it doesn't smoke irregularly. I have 1800 miles on it and have been filling up since every 600 miles since day one.

Thanks For the advice ill wait a little longer. Just another question, because of my problem I check my oil every 200 miles, is it bad to wait for it to need a full quart, should I be filling up every time it's low half a quart?

Do you wait for engine to reach full operating temp before revving above 3k?

I have almost 11,000 miles on my F10 M5 now and I've topped up the oil 3 times. Not too bad I say.
