How much harm if I'm late for running in service?

Had the beast 2 weeks now and almost at 1200 miles, should hit it next week.

However, I'm going to struggle to get it in for service possibly until about 1500 miles.

is this going to harm it at all?

Any thoughts appreciated.

I asked this q in the maintenance forum - general consensus was no big deal.

I had my run-in service at around 1400.

No harm. I did my break-in at 2000 miles and my car is perfect and doesn't burn any oil at all. In fact when I did the oil analysis for my second oil change at 5,500 miles I found that there were some very small amounts of metal in the oil change which suggests that the break-in oil change was too early.

Ideally I think the break-in oil change should be at 3000 miles.\\

I was told by BMW in Aberdeen, not to go 500m over the run in service.... Or the warranty would be invalidated...

Correct? Anyone know?

I'm showing 17000 miles for my next oil change, did yours show as 5000 on the service screen? Edit - or does it change once you have 1200 service?

BMW M5 uses CBS (condition based service). This means that everyone's break-in service varies slightly. The ECU monitors how the car is being driven and then recommends first service mileage accordingly.

I would try to not exceed 300 miles over the first service. Dealers will perform services early, just ask and they will tell you how many miles early they will accept the car. First service is the most importaint so they might only accept it 100 miles early. Other services they normally accept the car around 300-350 miles early - if I remember correctly.

I personally like to do my break-in service as close to 1,200mi as possible - to remove the metal shavings ASAP. Then I have an oil and oil filter change done between break-in service and the next service. I would highly recommend this to everyone.

This sounds like a good idea - I've done 6,100 miles now and it will take a long time to get to the next service because I do a lot of city driving. My problem is that I paid for the service pack and I don't think they'll agree to bring the service forward so much when the CBS indicator in the car says that the next service is only due in 9,000 miles. I don't mind paying for an interim oil/filter change now, but wouldn't want the CBS indicator to reset. Have any other owners with the service pack done an interim oil service?

The running in is coming in at 1250, interested about the next one though, says 17000 miles currently.

Is everyone doing additional changes in between the CBS? Mine's leased so no bother to me if it suffers once I hand it back in 2 years.

No I did it at 5000 regardless of what the screen says. I believe that BMW may set oil replacement schedule based on optimizing economics of warranty cost versus service cost, I do it on optimizing longevity of my car.

Exactly. I agree thats right course of action in your case.

This guys is why you should always buy used cars of people like me and not off lease...

Yup, great point. Sure I'll not be redlining it much.... That said I always get itchy for a new car every couple of years, not sure how much extra care and cash I'd spend on maintenance even if I owned it outright.

I guess it's luck of the draw with used cars unless you buy from someone you know or at least have dealings on here with.

I know very reputed private car dealer who is a BMW enthusiast and owns 4 M cars. He told me that he never gets an M car which didnt go through the first service in time. I don't know much details but he is pretty picky about the cars on his lot.

Mine was done at 1,360 which was not a problem at all and only 50 miles or so over the service indicator. I've heard the number 1,800 miles quoted as being the upper limit.
