The M3 is indeed a great all-around car and arguably the best choice if you'll only have one car, but if you've already got an M5, I think you'd be happier if you picked a second car that was a bit more focused on driving feel rather than also concerning itself all-around usability like the M3. If you want something much less expensive but arguably still very fun to drive, think of things like Miata, FR-S/BRZ, and Boxster/Cayman -- maybe Mini, though FWD might irritate you. Up from there price-wise, any of the other options discussed (Viper, 911, R8, 458) would also likely be fun, though in a different way.

Drove one. Feels good, but it's pretty slow. If you have an automatic you have to shift manually to have any fun, but even that's not the greatest. That engine just isn't designed to rev high. I vastly preferred the sound and feel of the Z4 M Coupe I drove, but the current Z4's looks and gadgetry are much better. Too bad the current one doesn't come in a hardtop M version, ideally with the current M3's S65 engine....

if the prices come down nicely in the next year, then yes. it would be my all time favourite. ticks all boxes except maybe the engine noise which i find lacks a bit, nothing compared to the F458.
if the maclaren prices stay up where they are now then i shall go for the 911S or a next gen cayman. peter |

There is a nice shopping list in the August Top Gear magazine for speed week.
I picked one up today (happen to be in Swindon UK till I leave for Dublin tomorrow AM) and it is pretty nice write-up that takes up half of the magazine. M5, M6 Convert, C63 AMG Black, and MP4-12C included in the selection set. Might consider laying hands on one if you have access to a Barnes & Noble (or similar) in the states. |

The only thing that's similar between a 458 and an M5 is the gearbox. I'm confused that these two cars are even being compared here. TOTALLY different driving experienses.
If it was my choice and I wanted a weekend car that was nothing like the M5 I would get a 6-speed LP640, 430 Scuderia or a 997 GT2/GT3RS. |

I've got a 458 - my first Ferrari after 3 Lambos. I've had lots of cars over the years but I've never had one as good as this. Nearly 30,000km and no warranty claims. For driving fun, it reminds me of the motorbikes I had in my youth. It feels like no other car I've driven.

however i need a second car which is sufficiently comfy for trips to scotland, wales and ireland from my home in cambridge (my M5 is LHD for trips to and on the continent) and -aside from the cost- a 991 carrera S or a cayman might be more suited, while also giving a lot in the fun department. peter |

For me my second car is the F10 M5. I've got a little Fiat 500 that gets 45mpg rated and 56mpg actual as a daily driver. Plus I love how people think how sensable I am by driving a Fiat. LOL!
The next car I get to compliment my F10 M5 after a few years is either going to be an E92 M3, F82 M4, Audi R8, or Ferrari F430. By around 2015 all of these cars should be pretty cheap by comparison. My goal is to get a smaller, lighter, 2 door coupe sports car that will be more fun to throw around because of its lightweight. I'm not going to be looking for a car with more horsepower than the F10 M5, as I intend on tuning my F10 M5 to hopefully 800hp. |

I recently traded an F430 for a GTR. The 430 was an incredible car but over time can seem to be a bit short on power when compared to more modern cars. The GT-R is one of fastest production cars out there for the money, giving up 0-60 and quarter mile only to the Veyron/Aventador/911 Turbo S, faster than the gallardo or 458, and can pull 1.4 lateral g's, all for the price of a M5......but it does have an artificial feel to in comparsion to an F car......I agree, if you can swing it the 458 is incredible....haven't sat in or driven an MP412C yet, but it doesn't sound nearly as exotic as the 458. I'd consider the 458 once it depreciates a bit more :P
