Question??

Finally, my car just came to my local dealer this morning. When I left my car after ED it had 2 miles on it (because I didn't drive my car due to time constraint). But when I looked at the car this morning it has 22 miles on it. So 20 miles has been driven during shipping.

Is this normal? I did talk to ED department and they said they will look into it as they emailed everyone who is involved in shipping process. ED department asked me to take the car from dealer as they are looking into this matter.

PKilla strkes again! 20 miles is excessive for ED! Wait till you get a response back from the ED Dept. and/or the dealer.

Agree!! I think up to 5 miles is ok but 20 is excessive. They said it can take 2-3 business days to get response.

To answer your question more directly. No I don't think that is normal. Mine only had like 5 miles on it when I got it back from ED.

I am not sure what to do about this matter. I spoke to dealer and they cant do anything about this matter as car came with these miles when it was delivered. I also spoke to BMW NA; they were not even helpful at all.

Suggestions??

Well the car has to be driven:
1) from ED drop off point to vehicle loading point (maybe 1-2 miles - I drove this myself on one occasion because they needed some help)
2) from Bremerhaven drop off point to storage (less than a mile)
3) from storage to the boat (1-2 miles)
4) from the boat, though customs and to VPC (1-2 miles)
5) onto truck from VPC (a few feet)
6) from truck to dealer lot (a few feet)

On the whole though, it's unlikely to add more than 3-8 miles.

It's the people that put them on the trucks and boats for shipping. The only time it's kind of in BMW's hands is when it gets to the VDC/VPC. After the VDC it gets put on another truck for shipment to the dealer. So there are several points when your car is driven before it reaches the dealer and almost all of them are out of BMW's control. The people who drive them work for private logisitics companies and are only answerable to that specific company. As in the case of Pkilla, his company fired him when they found out that he violated their terms of employment, BMW had nothing to do with his firing. The real problem is that it is almost impossible to know who and when your car was taken for a joy ride because there are so many points of when it could have happened, that is unless there is a rogue aspiring rap youtube sensation that uploads videos of the "Beasts" he gets to drive off the boat onto the docks. Moreover, it is highly unlikely that it gets taken for a joy ride when it reaches the VDC, as I have visited and toured a VDC in person and have learned that the employees who work there have a lot to lose if they are found to be in violation of the rules.

Therefore, unfortunately, there is virtually nothing that can be done if this happens to your car during the shipping process. When I got my car back, I thought that 5 miles might be a bit much, but then I looked it over thoroughly and saw no apparent damage. The VDC took good care of my M5 when it was coming through, and it had even been in an accident at the VDC itself. So I was just happy to finally have it back. Hope this in some way helps.

My understanding that in California at the Oxnard VPC they drive the cars from the ship/dock to the center. 1 mile.

Mine had 2 miles on it at the dealer lot. It came from the port of Houston.

That's consistent with my estimate because you didn't have the ED dropoff mile.

Wasn't disagreeing with you, just pointing out how low it can be.

Picked mine up at around 10 miles. Granted, I didn't order my car, so they probably moved it around the garage a lot.

Last conversation I had with ED department supervisor, she emailed to all the shipping companies involved to figure out why the car was driven 20 miles. She need 2-3 business days to get reply from everyone who is involved. She said that I should pick up the car as I am paying for it but I am not sure if I should pick up the car or not. Because if I pick up the car I will be basically saying that I am ok with this. I am just confused. Or i can just pick up the car and forget about this and enjoy it.
I am going to call ED again tomorrow to get updates on this.

I'd still do whatever work you can to see where the miles were put on, until you hit a dead end. But, I would pick up the car and let it go. In all reality, unless someone seriously hooned it (highly unlikely) you'll be fine. But if there are issues down the road, you'll have a paper trail of conversations, etc. that you can reference.

You can check for hooning by looking at tread depth. Should be same as new.

yea thats a good idea. I will get all the tire tread measurement to make sure. Is there any log which tells us that if the car has been revved to what RPM or the top speed car has been driven?

I don't think so. Not unless BMW has access to that from the black box.

You can check what the tread depth should be on tire rack. I think it is 9.5/32.

Now they are investigating into who drove the car and what was the reason. I hate when people someone else car if they really want to drive the car BUY ONE!!! .. POS people..

Punks. I doubt this would happen in Georgia.

I'm glad they're investigating this. It's a good sign they take it seriously.
