Has anyone used T-Mobile's sync up drive in their M5? https://explore.t-mobile.com/t-mobile-sync-up-drive

I saw a demo of it on a family member's '12 Nissan Altima and i works great. Plugged it into his OBD II port, and provides:
- Real-time GPS tracking of car. useful in case car is stolen or valet takes it for a drive.
- Error fault detection and logging
- Perimeter fencing for the car
- Perhaps most useful feature - if car is "bumped" (car needs to have vibration sensor so OBD II port can be signaled), it will log the time and send you an alert.
- Cost $10. you get all of the above + hotspot in the car with unlimited 3G + 2 GB LTE speeds!

Works with an app on your iPhone or Android called "Motion by Mojio". I could see every trip logged - basic stats (length of trip in miles and minutes, mph, max RPM, max speed, MPG ) + map of distance covered. seemed pretty freakin cool. I have valeted the car ONCE since I got it from the fear of abuse. If someone can confirm this works on M5, it would solve it. I would consider getting it for my other car as well.

If you already have T-mobile's "One" plan, it only costs $10 / month but provides hotspot as well. You can switch it to unlimited LTE as well for a total of $25 / month. Device is $149, but with current promo the device is free.

Thoughts? Experience? Greatly appreciated.

*** TESTED ALREADY - RESULTS BELOW ***
- just tested with the device from Altima's unit. Results - Wow!
- plugged in and worked like a charm
- did a mini trip. Device logged the full trip on map with full visual representation of all points of hard acceleration, hard breaks
- device also logged trip stats such as avg mph, max speed, MPG, Max RPM etc
- logged start and end time of trip
- promptly sent me notification when I unplugged the device from car
- Also gave me any existing recalls on the car. Saw that I have a 1 recall due in my car for drive shaft. Will call my SA. Will attach pic.

Really impressed. I am getting it for my car

*** END UPDATE ***

Thanks,

I saw it and I do agree it has its benefits, however, I do worry about privacy concerns with this one which may hurt it. I could see this being used for your child's car.

That's a valid point. After posting this last night I thought about the same - the app has a record of all trips and locations. If there was a way that this data is only stored locally on my phone instead of their servers, then his would be more ok with me.

Don't think I will pull a trigger on this for this very reason. The search continues...

I love all this new technology, however, with all that has happened in the last few years and the continued hacking that's in going, having my shit out there scares me. I would love to upload all my personal stuff to the cloud and have it accessible wherever I'm at but still not convinced it's secure yet.

By the way, since you mentioned location tracking, the iPhone, is tracking your every move and takes notes of the location data, time/date/frequency. Make sure you shut that down under privacy>location services>system services > frequent locations. I also shut off a ton of other items in the system services that's tracking personal data.

Also, I found out recently that it's also listening to conversations looking for key words that it could tie back to marketing. Example, you tell your wife you like that BMW M5 and next day in the browser, social media, you start seeing adds for BMW. It's not a coincident. It's the phone actually listening in. Google it and shut it down. Since I've done it, I've minimized a ton of the add services.

I've heard of that happening to others. I've always had my stuff shut down so never had that happens. As much as I love the new technology it also scares me thinking what else is going on.

Facebook messenger and WhatsApp are always listening in on everything coming in from your microphones. So you can be having a conversation about xyz with your friend, FB messenger / WhatsApp (owned by FB) pick up on it and start promoting stories about this person and xyz in your newsfeed. It's truly creepy at a whole new level. This is not a beta feature (meaning everyone has it if they have updated their apps in past 8 months or so).
