M5 F10 at the Ring next weekend - cant sleep

I am looking forward to drive my black 2012 M5 F10 at the Nurburgring 1.5 to 3.5.14. How will it deal with all the turns, hard braking, high speed parts and so on. Last two years at the Ring I had a fabulous Panamera Turbo - the best big car at the track for me so far. 8 mins B to G with grace. The Porsche had no problems at all. My M5 E60 was great fun at the Ring, with a nymphomanic engine (nothing like a screamer!) - and I`m sure my very angry F10 is much better in handling, brakes and performance. I have implemented manual steering of the exhaust sound, open all the time in M1 and M2 mode - helps a lot to get the best sound as possible all the time.
I have changed to Castrol react SRF brake fluid, to avoid brake problems. I will also bring my 991 4S to feel the differens of these cars - head to head. It`s gone be fun. Do anyone have any experience with the F10 at the Ring or any trackdays regarding brakes, tires, handling and so on? Is the car best on 19" og 20"? Is the Michelin PSS the best tire for the track? I`m not to happy with the looks of the M343s, but their light and strong. Any suggestions on alternatives except the too expensive BBS Fi? Here`s a lap from last year with the Pana in front of my brothers 991 Carerra - great fun. It`s all about keeping calm.

Report from M5 F10 first drive at the Ring, still cant sleep

I`m back home in one piece. Thanks for the comments so far.
The Ring is a multiheaded dragon - and it requires full focus. Her is the first lap.

As expected the M5 F10 had better handling and brakes than my E60. The engine pulls even stronger than the Panamera Turbo with 590 ps FVD kit, ceramic brakes and PDCC(hydraulic anti roll bars). And the power comes quicker, with less turbo lag. Combined with the also faster DSG gearbox this driveline gives a very effective an nimble drive at the demanding Ring. And I did luckily put on a new set of brake pads http://carbopad.de witch made the brakes very effective, it would have been useless without this extra stopping power.
Peter is my mechanics at the Ring. He fixes everything so far, brakes, steering, cooling, engines - Porsches, Ferraris, BMWs and so on. He knows the Ring and will often predict where the damages have happened. "You broke this in “Karusell”, am I right?, to early out of the turn?" You just look down in shame - he has been there -done that.
The E60 picture in this post is from the Karusell (Carousel). When you go all the way to the Ring its valuable to have Peter, +491726524593 pwinnik@web.de. My tyre supplier at the Ring http://www.reifen-radermacher.de told me that the 2014 Michelin Pilot Super Sport where even better than last years, so I ditched my 2012 MPSS for a fresh set. And it was much better. The grip and specially the turn-in approved, witch is crucial for the M5. They also filled nitrogen http://getnitrogen.org/why/ in the tires; witch gave me stabile pressure and no smoke from tyres after a full lap at day two.
So all in all the fantastic engine, fast gearbox, good brakes, persistent tyres and a cool headed driver turned out to be a fabulous drive. Overtaking is a pleasure, never driven such a strong car at the Ring. Just look when I follow my friends F430 Scuderia.

Compared to the Panamera the M5 has little more push with less lag. The handling is good at the M5, but it doesn’t give you any confidence in the speeds this driveline makes it possible to go. The centre of gravity is to high, it rolls to much and snaps out with the back if your to heavy footed. The e-diff is very efficient, but when it snaps, you better be ready. With stability system on its very safe, but you looses the ability to push the car into the necessary oversteer. In M-mode this changes. You can steer the car more with the throttle, if you go slow in fast out. This is the smart mode at the Ring. With everything off you hear the crowd trackside screaming for blood, and you can see the multiheaded dragon in the woods trackside roaring COME TO MEEEEEE. If you can ignore those, you are the hero of the day - filled with adrenaline going sideways in Brünnchen to the applause of hundreds of action-hungry spectators. The M5 F10 is for experienced drivers - as you all probably know already. The Panamera on the other hand was absolutely stabile, no roll, awesome brakes - much safer and a little faster around the Ring. But I had 100 laps with my Panamera at the Ring and 5 laps with the M5 so far, and I like the M5 a lot - it makes me feel alive and kicking. Looking forward for next trip. It’s useful to plan at trip where we can meet at the Ring and drive and share experiences. If your interested, just tell me - I do some trips every year - since 1992. HereŽs some laps with the 991 4s – its a walk in the park, as being 20 again- its so light, fast, sharp turn in, revs high, shifts as mind controlled, great sound and very stabile – a true sports car.

The Nurburgring is what you’re dreaming of. The Ring, the machine and you – battling with the law of physics and you own ego. You have to decide to have the right speed into every corner, then you can go safe every lap. Overtake only when sure you have been seen. Check your rear mirror every 5. second, and let everyone behind you pass at once. Never loose this focus or consentration. This is driving in its purest form. I`m almost out of words – nowhere else you can experience this.

thank you for posting your videos. This is better than porn!

In the Carousel, the M5 camera position appeared as tall as an SUV in comparison to the F430!

I was unable to translate the website for the carbopads. are those the same as the carbotech pads?

Also, the grip on the 2014 Michelin set was noticeably better? did they change the compound?

thanks again, fantastic videos.

Damn. How is this not on the front page? Lol!

Awesome man! Although your English is somewhat broken, I understood what you were saying. My two favorite things you said are these:

"The M5 F10 is for experienced drivers" and "The Ring - The machine and you."

Epic!

Yeah good call on the brake pads and I agree on the high center of gravity of the M5. Curious, would you try to lower the suspension and install stiffer sway bars to help the dynamics of the M5 on the Ring?

Yeah the 991 I'm sure gave the true sports car experience. What a machine that is! Lucky you got to drive the 991, M5, and a Panamera on the Ring. I need to go back one day.

Thanks for the positive feedback. It inspires to share more stuff.

Yes - the M5 looks and feels like a SUV beside the F430. The F430 is all sound and feelings and low like nothing else from this planet- and the M5 is a brutal calculating tecnoloaded German uberwagen - less talk and more power - pure efficiency.
The F430 is so low actually - your really looking down on it. So wide, low and compact at the same time. When I stand beside it it gives me a UFO feeling - out of this world. I am planning to buy a 458 Spider in a year- can't wait to take it to the Ring and smell the flowers, the trees, exhaust , oil and rubber in a delicious petrol head mix.

The brake pads are from carbopad.de and carbopad.com http://www.carbopad.de

Regarding the 2014 MPSS, yes - they had adjusted the compound I was told- and the grip was clearly better.

I would love to have all the goodies from the 2014 CP in my car, and it seems realistic to lower the car and get stiffer sway bars as you say. I will see what I can do.

I`m driving my cars at the Ring as often as I can. It takes 14 hours and 1300 km to get there, and the trip at the A1 in Germany is fast. I had 314 km/h (195 mph) 2 times at the M5 speedo - and the car was stabile at this top speed. The 991 4s in 313 km/h. My son and I switched cars on the way. These cars were so to say born here at autobahn and Nurburgring - and here you really understand the capabilities of the car - and you get an idea of what you have paid for. It`s like the other cars is driving in reverse! Here is my brother doing 290 km/h (185 mph) on A1 in his 991 Carrerra.

You should really go back if you can - to feed the speed monster in you - while the rest of the world is being over-regulated and "normal".

Sorry for my broken English - it`s just my Norwegian brain trying to communicate with English words.

The camera is a iPhone 5 mounted inside.

My brother says:
Full speed driving and free speed limit :-) 295 on the tacho, 290,1 GPS and an average of 268 during almost 3 minutes, felt good!

This is amazing. Thanks for posting your experience and thoughts - I hope I can get out there some day to experience this first hand.

Two questions:

1) What is the camera car in the first video?

2) What software/gear did you use which plots your location on the map and tells you your speed in corners and straights? It looks almost like a video game!

Thanks again - this is a real inspiration.
