Start stop function question

Hi guys

I'm new to this start stop function. I just picked up my 2015 m5. It seems start stop function doesn't seem to work properly. It sometimes kicks in and sometimes it doesnt. I'm not sure what the conditions are.

I thought it kicks in during traffic stops but it doesn't seem to do so.

Nvm. More playing around with the car. Has to be in D1 mode.

stop and go

Keeep playing around,
you'll figure it out.
Somehow you were so eager to pick it up, that you declined the sell-persons invitation to explain some of the basic car functions.

Also, if you get tired of playing around with that mode, you can get it coded out so it's off the whole time. I never use it.

There are a variety of conditions where stop start will not engage. One example being that the engine has to be at some set temperature.

There are a few settings on the vehicle which disable this annoying function.

On my 550, whenever it is in Sport or Sport+ mode, it is deactivated.

I would avoid this feature for 2 reasons.

1) greatly diminished battery life

2) hot turbos and no oil flow when engine off.

If you search into this subject you will find that current battery tech outside of hybrids just doesn't last with high start/stop cycles.

From user's manual:
The engine is not switched off automatically in
the following situations:
▷ External temperature below approx.
+37 ℉/+3 ℃.
▷ The external temperature is high and automatic
climate control is running.
▷ The passenger compartment has not yet
been heated or cooled to the required level.
▷ The engine is not yet at operating temperature.
▷ The wheels are at a sharp angle or the steering
wheel is being turned.
▷ After driving in reverse.
▷ Fogging of the windows when the automatic
climate control is switched on.
▷ The vehicle battery charge is very low.
▷ The engine compartment lid is unlocked.
▷ Stop-and-go traffic.

Also it put more wear and tear on engine compartment including the starter while does not save gas significantly.. maybe 1-2 mpg at best??
To me this is the worst money I paid for...I don't use it since I found it even dangerous, specially when you are behind the traffic light at uphill. The brake assistance feature holds the car to avoid rolling back about 2 second while with ASS enable it takes about 2 second to start the engine...

2014+ model years remember the last setting. So, once it is off, it stays off next time you get in the car. No need to coding.

Quick question to the UK guys.

Start stop. I was under the impression that the car remembered last set setting, I.e if off, the car would restart in off.

Well not in mine it won't. Am I missing something?

I'm pretty sure mine doesn't remember either. Mine has an indicator light when button is pressed and for sure that never lights up without pressing the button after each start

Last User Mode is the default setting in some markets, but not UK.

Show your dealership the attached bulletin; I believe I was told that there may a charge for this. I didn't have mine changed.

US M cars have this code by default (even mine which is 2013), but dealers can do it for other cars (BMW). I had my 2013 650i coded by dealer for free...You should ask your dealer in UK. Worst case scenario they would charge you which should be cheap...

Its a 20W electric coolant pump, not oil pump.
The turbos have oil and coolant passages.
The oil pump is mechanical.

My aust delivered car didnt remember it either.

I have just had it taken off by my dealer, as they advised they can do it if the customer requests it be removed. i did it, and i am much happier, even though 5 days later i got an invoice in the mail for AU$200 for their work.....

Jup, they are never cheap to do anything.
Best is to ask for it to be activated before the car is delivered, should be free then.
