Performance Results from Autozeitung BMW F10 M5 vs X6 M Comparo. 0-120mph in 11.7!

COMMENTS

German magazine Autozeitung has pitted the new BMW M5 (F10) against its bigger cousin. The F10 M5 is powered the S63Tu, an improved version of the BMW X6M's S63 engine. Given the S63Tu's enhancements over the S63 and the F10 M5's lighter weight, the M5 winning in all categories and placing in 1st is certainly not surprising.

What is interesting however is to see more real world F10 M5 performance test results.

They were able to get the F10 M5 from 0-100km/h (62mph) in 4.2 seconds and from 0-200km/h (124mph) in just 11.7 seconds, which is wicked fast.

The rest of the data, despite being in German, is pretty self explanatory and easy to tell, so have a look below.

Holy cow! This is unbelievable fast. Wonder if they have turned up the boost pressure on these press cars - or maybe the M5 is this fast?

This 100 - 200 km/h performance must be very close to the Porsche 911 Turbo S?

No doubt the M5 is a beast, incredible numbers. I got to be honest, I stand by my "poor mans M5" with the 550i modded.

M5: 80kmh - 180kmh: 6,4s
Hartge 550i: 80kmh - 180kmh: 7,2s

Its faster, sure, but less then 1s.

note: those 550i times were on summer tires in 38F/3C dry conditions.

In my opinion the braking distance for X6 is impressive, almost the same numbers with M5's

I am also more impressed by the ultra heavy SUV doing so well. Not a huge fan of the new M5 in terms of performance or styling because simply it does not bring anything brave/new in the styling compared to the old M5 or a regular F10 and the technology is almost identical to X5/X6 Ms which are out there since 2 years. I am hoping BMW is reserving something more distinctive for the M6 if not M6 Grand Coupe.

For people who thinks these numbers are uber impressive look what the relatively modest 1M did in the hands of Auto Zeitung:

Base Price in Germany at the time (May 2011) of test: 50,500 EUR

Test weight was 1522kg (factory:1495kg);

0-100km/h: 4.5 sec.
0-160km/h: 9.8 sec.
0-200km/h: 16,3 sec.

Braking 100-0 km/h cold/warm: 35.2 m/33.7m.

Slalom 18m: 68.1 km/h

Auto Zeitung lap time: 1:39.4 s.

Nothing really "wrong" with the M5 just imo with that price tag, heavy technical artillery and all the power on tap, I would expect it doing better than that. I really believe that "better" is intentionally reserved for the Gran Coupe

I somewhat agree with you, but remember you are comparing a small sports car ( 1M ) to a very heavy luxury sedan. Apples and oranges. I'm not a fan of everything going to FI, but these numbers are still quite impressive.

You are right of course but the M5 is not only a "very heavy luxury sedan", can't be; it is also supposed to be a sports car in disguise. The key words you have used and I intended in my earlier post by giving the 1M numbers is " very heavy". The basic reason that the M5 has better numbers than the X6M appears to be the weight difference solely. Then the real question is couldn't it be lighter than 1937kgs to be really better? I think that even the 1M should be lighter than 1522kg. It is 100 kg more than my old E90 330i with M pack!

Yes weight is a factor, but I would think aerodynamics play a role as well.

Yes, agreed on that also: Compared to M5 which is fine in that department, the aerodynamics of the X6M and the 1M are both SUV-like which undoubtedly affect their performance negatively after some point in speed: Look at the difference between the M5 and X6M "after" they reach 100km/h.

I also notice now the difference in tires; the X6M has slightly larger tires but not max performance category at all (Bridgestone Dueller), the M5 has the best in market for performance street driving, Michelin Pilot Super Sport; but still at launch X6M is quicker till 60km/h and this despite the tire/weight disadvantages! I guess the auto box in X6M works much better at launch

New M5 is fast, not to say the X6 is slow. I'm hoping the M6 will be even faster.

So the M5 does 0-60 in 4.5 sec, according to the C&D tests the 650i also does 0-60 in 4.5 sec. Don't get me wrong these are strong numbers but I expected the M5 to be faster than the 650i by a few tics at least!

Nothing to be confused about
It's the AWD that makes X6M rocket forward from the line

M5 was already clocked at 4s flat 0-60mph
Different day, different numbers
Dont just compare numbers from different mags, done on different days
If 650i and M5 put together side-by-side, same day, same track, M5 will blow its doors off

Where'd you get that stat from? The data above shows it went 0-100km/h (0-62mph) in 4.2 seconds.

C&D actually tested the M5 at 0-60 in 3.7 seconds and 1/4 mile at 12.0 seconds @ 122 MPH: C&D Road Test

0-120 in 11.7 is nuts.

Once tuned this car will really own the streets.
