This is the oil which makes rodbearing failure in every engines. Includes old m5 v10 or 9x m3 this is only track use oil. And then out. Normal daily driveing 5w40 10w60 oils is rubbish. In Europe in not rodbearing issues because we use 5w30 or 5w40 and turbo engines allmoust every car 5w40.

Close thread.

The never ending oil debate!

Everyone suddenly becomes an oil expert. I simply use this, which is recommended by the dealer.

Bm said at beginning that 10/60 was the correct grade oil when questionable and the container your showing is just repackaged Shell oil at an inflated price.
Ahh so good to be back.

I'm aware that this oil is Shell and is new after the predecessor Castrol. But correct me if I'm wrong, 5w30 or 5w40 are the best grade oils for Turbo cars with low compression engines

Product Details

The BMW 5W30 motor oil is the factory engine oil approved for almost all BMW engines, except for BMW Diesel and some M3/M5/M6 engines. It's the first oil approved in the US for BMW's turbo N20 N54 N55 engines, including the S55 engine in the 2015+ F80 M3/F82 M4. This oil can also be used in E39 M5 and Z8 with the S62 engine, per the label inside the engine compartment. It can also be used in most MINI engines. Replaces the previous part number of 07510017866 (07-51-0-017-866).

Yeah. Good to go in M5 f10 ☝🏻 Except some M3 M5 and M6 engines.

RAFiK-BMWClubUAE you're in a very hot climate so that grade may well suit your engine's needs, over here the thinner grade goes with my engine fine as does the same 0-30 oil recommended and filled by BMW for the OP's new replacement engine.

Yeah. Good to go in M5 f10 Except some M3 M5 and M6 engines.
Everyone is the Middle East use 5w40 for S55 engines and 5w30 for S63 engines (all versions. S63B44O0, S63B44T0, S63B44T2 and S63B44T4)

God I love oil threads! I haven't seen or commented on a good one like this since the early days of M5board in the e39 section!

I believe the owners manual in the US states 0w-30 or 0w-40 depending on temperature conditions. I can't comment strongly about the S63 yet, as I've only done 5k miles... just about to change the oil that I put in the car (so technically my 2nd oil change, but first interval). The Mobil 1 0w-40 seemed to perform well. I burned 1 quart during this 5k interval.

As for older M engines, I disagree with others regarding 10w-60 use. Maybe it's an issue in the S65 and possibly S85, but if I owned one of those cars I would still run it in the summer. Now the S62, I do have a LOT of experience with as I currently own 3 of them and have owned 2 others. That engines runs best on 10w-60 whether you baby it around town or thrash it on the track. 10w-60 or bust in the e39! I've put 160k+ miles on one s62 and it has never been opened besides valvecover gaskets. The engine currently sits at 282k on it. Still runs well and gives higher hp, newer cars a run for their money still!

In conclusion, the oil BMW typically recommends at first release IMO is usually best. They always seem to add 5w-30 later as an approved oil because why not? They want to simplify their distribution network and cover their ass when some tech puts 5w-30 in an M engine when he normally should have put something else.

One more point... I would highly recommend against using 10w-60 in any of the BMW turbo engines.

Technician117. Good old e39 forums, a ton of oil discussions in the early and mid ‘00s. My S62 engine was at 253k miles when I sold it in ‘09. I did use Mobil 1 10w30 and only ‘engine’ issue I had were valley pan gaskets

For the S63 are you recommending 5w30

For the S63 are you recommending 5w30
Congrats on the big mileage on the e39!

I recommend a "zero" weight oil for the S63 unless you live where the temps are always hot, then maybe 5w-30 or 5w-40.

Also, let's all not forget one thing!

The engine lifetime depends entirely and solely on the driver's behavior!

I've seen multiple M engines fail at very short mileage while others last for a long time even if they're being tracked and redlined.

The proper way of maintaining your engine is for you to think of it as a human being. You just cannot get up from bed straight into a 100m running race. You need to have your coffee/juice/milk to boot up your system and have it ready for the day. The same thing goes for an engine, as you need to properly warm it up (by driving it slowly and to let the oil circulate and heat up gradually) then when the temps are right you start giving it all.

Also, assuming you were participating in a 100m running race. You won't be able to finish running and immediately go to bed and expect yourself to fall asleep. After a spirited drive / Track Day, you should allow the engine to cool down (by doing couple of cooling laps) to go back to it's neutral state before switching it off.

These little habits will eventually make your engine last for much much longer.

I myself, had an S54 which lasted for 262,000 km and had an S65 which had it's Rod Bearings changed (as a precautionary measure) at 135,000 km. The Rod Bearings came out to be almost as brand new even though I drift my car / track my car / red line it to 8700 RPM almost on a daily basis. Knowing when to do that is the trick.

So regardless of the oil you use, if you start your car and start bashing it around until the engine seizes... Don't go blame it on the oil... Have some sense and logic.

Any update on your case by the way? I guess we all kinda drifted away with the oil topic!

Hey RAFiK

The beast is running very strong. The difference can be felt be felt between new and old engines. I've only put about 200 miles on the new engine so far though. The cold start/fast idle is at higher RPMs than before. Maybe due to the "updated software" in the repair order? 🤔 Also gas mileage the same at 14mpg.

Did the workshop give you a reason why your old engine failed?

Glad to hear your baby is up and running.

Well, I don't believe all failures are customer faults. There could be manufacturing defects. I hear so many times when things break, 'what did you do??'. Remember, the F10 M5/M6 did have a TSB for the oil pump.

I used to blast my E39 M5 around and I had it for a long time (135K miles). Did all the maintenence and submitted oil samples regularly. I drive this M5 much less aggressively and I need a new engine. Go figure. To answer your question, the dealer just said there were metal shavings in the oil and filter. The assumption was "failed rod bearings" in the notes. I was allowed browse through the findings that was submitted to BMW and nothing stood out as to what definitively caused this.
