One other MAJOR factor when comparing the performance of the F10 M5 with the E60 and other competitors is the average power under WOT acceleration.

Look at the power curve. From 5800-7000rpm the engine makes a constant 560hp (slightly less from 5800-6000). This means that as you shift up to the next gear under WOT and engine revs drop from 7000 to roughly 5500rpm you start off with almost 560hp again in the higher gear! No need to wait until redline before max power is made again.

In a engine with a "regular" power curve, you only have peak power over a few hundred rpm's, just before redline.

This means that one 560hp engine isn't necessarily similarly performing as another 560hp engine... If one makes 560hp over a rpm band of 1000-1200rpm's and the other just over a few hundred rpm's, the first one will accelerate much better than the second one.

Let's compare the S65 with the S63:

In the F10 M5, let's say that the typical WOT rpm range for each gear is 5500-7000rpm (based on Youtube videos):

From the S63 dyno graph
5500rpm - 520hp
6000rpm - 560hp
7000rpm - 560hp

Average power: 547hp

In the E60 M5, let's say that the typical WOT rpm range for each gear is 6000-8300rpm (based on Youtube videos):

From the S65 dyno graph
6000rpm - 440hp
7700rpm - 507hp
8300rpm - 490hp

Average power: 479hp

So, as you can see, average power is higher for the S63, but just as important; where the F10 has 520hp available from 5500rpm and starts off in the next gear with that power, the E60 "only" has 440hp at 6500rpm. A 80hp difference!!!

That difference makes a HUGE impact under acceleration and is also the main reason the F8x is soooo much faster than the E9x, even though it only has 11hp more.

(The above rpm ranges differs depending on which gear you're in, but the F10 M5 always has a significantly higher hp rating at the start of each gear under WOT acceleration than the E60 M5. The fact that it makes 560hp from 6000-7000rpm is also a major contributor. The S65 makes 507 only over a 50-100rpm range...)
Great explanation. Here is a really good video that explains torque and hp curves and relationship to turbos:

Turbo engines have fatter torque bands so they can pull harder for longer.

Hi guys, I went for the first time on a drive in the M4 and I have to say wowww... The car for some reason just felt much faster... It also seems like the gears were much shorter, especially 3rd and 4th.. Not sure if it actually is..
For the first time I am considering maybe switching to the new M4.

Can anyone post a vid of the f80 m4 vs. the m5

Great vid.

I just noticed that the RS6 featured is the previous gen model (e.g. the one with the 5.0 liter V10.

Still the M5 handled really well. Not sure though if it's the base 560 hp model or the Competition Package 575 hp.

Valid point.

Unfortunately, the new M3/M4 have downsized their engines compared to the predecessor which means that the engine sound and exhaust is 'downgraded'...........unless you purchase upgraded exhaust muffler (e.g. BMW M Performance Exhaust System)

For basic stock exhaust sound:
Lexus RC-F > M3/M4

Stock for stock, a naturally-aspirated V8 will have a louder and meaner exhaust sound compared to an inline-six.

You are absolutely right and then Merc E63 AMG beats the M3 and M5 beats the E63 AMG

you guys are all kidding right...?? I think the sarcastic smiley from RPiM5 gives that away...

i've driven 3 M4's and 2 M3's now. all had been run in and had break-in service. My M5 eats them all for breakfast in every way, in every gear and at every single RPM through the rev range. apart from cornering and agility of course....

M5 = deadly weapon/ supercar.
M4/3= boys toy/sports car. (I'd still have one of course!)

Yes I'm just kidding. Lol! The M3/M4 is sports car. The M5 is a Business Sports Sedan. The M6 is a Business Grand Touring (GT) car. Driving clients around in the back of an M3 or M4 would make no sense. There's no 4 zone climate control in the M3/M4. The only thing the M5 sucks at is getting the best lap times at a track. The M6 makes up for that somewhat. How am I supposed to make my getaway from robbing a bank in an M3 when the back seats aren't big enough to fit 3 heist members back there with all the money and doesn't have the straight line power to get away from the police with a full load bank robbers?? Riddle me that!

ive just seen your posts on the Vette thread and can now get why you and everyone are saying the M4 is far superior to pretty much anything... I wont bite any more...

RPI M5, I'll riddle it for you. The three guys that robbed the bank with you should be standing in the front of the bank scratching there heads after putting there bags of money that they were carrying into the back seat of the M3.

Then the driver of the M3 (you or me) travels into the sunset thinking about the Z06 and 911 that will be bought to drive away from the next bank robbery.

See it's easy.

I almost imagined it going something more like this.

But yours works too.
