In regards to allmotor's comment, are there reliabale Li-Ion options for us? I know the F90 uses one.

Probably 35ish lbs lighter, but that's quite a premium.

Interesting that a quick look online shows the Li/Ion battery as a replacement for only the 2016 through 2018 models. Was there a change in the charging system?

I am giving this battery one last chance.....weighs way less than oem.....800cca......Optima Batteries 8003-151 34R RedTop Starting Battery

I accidentally drained the battery after leaving car parked one week with no trickle charger......it has not performed well ever since....shorter reserve time and less crank juice.......just bought a new one and will make sure to trickle charge with the optima charging unit.....should be fine since I've had the battery on other cars with good success

If your battery is drained after one week it probably wasn't that good prior, I've Park my car for way over two months with no charger and it started up with no problem and I had no issues

I agree and why I am getting a new one....or probably a drain from aftermarket items like upgraded stereo amp, JB4, laser jammer ...who knows

Yes lithium is the way to go for weight savings....at a nice co$t....the downside is you lose a % of the much needed rear wheel tire traction by reducing weight (i've run Braille batteries before)

I meant it as in 38lbs is heavy for a replacement. I am looking at 21lb options. M5 is a heavy dog... you can still get traction. I have the meth tanks and will have a very heavy billet diff brace.

I did the Braille on my 2002 C5. It didn't last long before the battery was toast. I can't imagine one surviving in a M5 long at all.

I bet a Li-Ion could pull it off at 21lbs, but I suspect there are issues with that swap.

I agree that you should be able to park for a week and still start. I just did that a couple weeks ago with my M5.

However, I've had (4) 5-series cars now and they are prone to running down the battery because of all the electronics, when some module is faulty or refuses to go to sleep like it is supposed to and then you end up with a flat battery after a few days.

Typically you find this out after you buy a new battery and then you find out it still goes dead. I've been through this with E39 and E60's.

I know this is a relatively older thread but I am having a drainage issue that is strange. I replaced the battery in my m5 and even after replacing it still needs a jump start. Drove it around for an hour turned it off and tried to restart, again needed to be jumped. This has been going on for the past couple of days. I registered the battery but still get the Increased discharge warning. Unplugged the IBS last night after parked, get no warning but car still doesn't want to start without a jump. When I placed the jump pack on it, the voltage was at 9 amps. It's a new battery?!?! What would you guys suggest my next move to be. Plan to take it in to BMW Monday but any info before will help. Thank you in advance.

Even new batteries need to be charged to 100% since most of them tend to be on shelves for a long period of time and tend to lose charge. I'd hook the battery up to a battery maintainer and let it fully charge.

After an hours worth of driving, it should have fully charged. I'm thinking this is a bad battery.

You have something discharging your battery if you are getting the increased discharge warning. You can try topping off your battery with a trickle charger, but I'll bet you keep getting the warning. If you have comfort access then my bet is that one of your door handles is faulty and preventing the car from sleeping. You can test this by coming near the vehicle with your key and see if any of the car unlocks or locks when you are near.

That was the second thing I checked. Ever door handle works with no issue. As a last resort today, I took the car to AutoZone to check the battery. Their machine said it was a bad battery. It's weird because everything else works. Lights, CAS, seats, radio, etc... Just checked the battery and it still reads mid 9's. I'm still taking it to BMW to confirm but so far sounds like a battery.

Agreed it could be you got a bad battery, everyone is skeptical because that's uncommon and usually continued battery problems after replacing the battery means unresolved electrical problem in the car.

Get the new battery checked and replaced and see if that solves your problem. If not, move on to diagnosing the car.
