Curb Rash ! How much to repair?
About ready to turn in my 2012 535i to receive my new M5, however 3 of the rims have curb rash and the dealer wants $150 per wheel upon lease return unless I make my own arrangements. What is the going rate to have an independent shop fix curb rash?

Here in Nebraska, the local shop specializing in rims and wheels charges $100/wheel in 99% of cases. There always is a case where there is so much curb rash that they need to charge more, but usually arround $100.

Depending on how bad it is $100 seems reasonable but if it is extensive then it might be more. I'd try to get the dealer to give you a break since you are getting a new car.

Those wheels actually cost a lot more than that to replace! I'd accept the $150/wheel if you plan to just turn it in. But ALWAYS have your car appraised by a few dealers before turning in a lease. I don't remember the last time i turned one in. I normally trade out of them or sell them and pocket $5-10k equity. Most recently my wife's landcruiser lease was up and i called it around and got a dealer to pay $7500 over our buyout. My last X5 lease i sold it with 12 months left on the lease and came out $8k ahead. Its always best to call a few dealers and auto wholesalers and see what they will pay vs your buyout price. Even if its break even at least you won't get dinged for every little thing like when you turn it in.

Even with a private shop, the wheel work I have had done has ranged from $100-$200.
The issue (as explained to me) is it take a lot of time to strip all of the clear coat off the wheels (safely) before doing the repair and then to re-clear the wheel and let it set (takes 2- 3 days) at the shop. It is well worth the $150 in most cases. |

Since you're in SoCal, try Son Tran for wheel refinishing. Seen some awesome turnarounds from him

That cost for refinishing isn't out of the question. However if your next car is an M5 I am sure they can find it in their hearts to eat the cost. Up north this is the normal practice as they want more then anything for you to get into another BMW, let alone an M5. As for curb rash only way to get around this is with the exec package with the all around cameras. They work awesome when you remember to use them, as my wife has once had to remind me after our trip to the wheel re-finisher!
