Post Beware - Different M Oil

It's been 2900 miles with the beast and my oil-top-off light came on this morning on my way to work.

I went for awhile before having to top it off so hopefully this means little to no blow-by.

I was debating going to the dealer for the free top off or just using an old quart I had laying around at my residence from my E90 M3.

Thankfully! I just went to the dealer. Turns out this car doesn't take the traditional dedicated and branded 10W-60 castrol M oil, but instead takes a 5W-30.

So M drivers beware- hopefully this isn't a repost.

Cheers, Alpha

110th repost.

But it's okay. If you just joined us you may not have see the others. A lot of posts about this during the first 6 months after car was released in the US in September. Back then a lot if the dealers didn't know either and some people had the wrong oil installed by the dealers.

BTW the owners manual says approved oils include 0W-30, 0W-40 and 5W-30, with Castrol being the BMW recommend brand. The consensus among those who tried it is that the best oil for this engine is German Castrol 0W-30. That's what I use now because of faster warm up, smoother running while cold, and better startup protection.

This has even created at least one case of dealer confusion on the previous gen V10 cars. A guy reported taking his E60 M5 to the dealer for an oil change and they put in the 5W-30. He didn't realize it until he got home and inspected the service order. I believe the dealer corrected it with TWS for free, of course.

It's cheaper than the old M5 oil

Next he will post "zomg, I had to get the oil topped off after 1k-2.5k miles" That needs to be a sticky as well as: "Yes, S63's are known to burn through oil."
