Maxium Drivetrain Output Malfunction

I got this code this morning: Maxium Drivetrain Output not available. And then the damn thing cut off on me. It will start, but the rpms are up, and it will cut off again. So I placed a call to Bmw roadside assistance and I'm waiting for the tow service to take it in. This sucks especially after waiting so long for a spirited drive. To make things worst, they cant fix the car until tuesday. Has anyone had this prob before and what was the outcome. Thanks.

I've gotten this before:

"Drivetrain Malfunction: Maximum Drivetrain Output Not Available."

I still don't know it means exactly or what triggers it. I'm gonna ask my SA today actually.

Your car didn't cut off on you? My rpms went up and mine cut off even at idle. I will find out something and post up. Totally sucks.

No my engine didn't cut off, nor did I get the feeling like I lost power. Something weird must have set it off.

Swapped ends on the car one day when I ran across a slick portion of the road. The car did cut off I guess to keep me out of trouble.

Yes, it will. Did this a few times at M-school drifting the M5 on the figure 8.

I dropped it off and hopefully then can fix it tomorow. The SM advised me that hopefully it is something simple like charging up the battery as that happened before on a 7 and 5 series. He said it may be low due to sitting the last couple weeks. Before that I had only drove it about 5 times during a one week period before siting for 3 weeks. He said the charging system on these cars charge different. Not during driving but during coasting when there is not a load on the motor. Dave ask your service person if they knew about that. Hell if that is the case, I can see why this is low. My wife dont drive it that much and told me she didn't drive it while I was gone.

Hope you get it sorted out quickly boots, and that it is a simple battery charge!

WRT charging while coasting/breaking, I saw that while looking at the efficient dynamics info on the CIC. When the car was coasting/breaking, there was a note that IIRC said "battery charging".

I had a similar issue. Did you let the gas run low 15 miles close to empty and head uphill. Air in the fuel line was my issue. You have to stamp on the gas for 5 mins or so to clear the line and the warning light goes out after an hour of being switched off.

I think running low on gas or running out of gas could be the reason why this Malfunction occurs. I ran out of gas once in my M5 by accident (seriously wasn't my fault) and I got a Drivetrain Malfunction that day when I put gas back in it and tried to start it back up but there was too much air in the lines. I mentioned this to my SA today and she said that the only other time she has heard of someone else having this on their F10 M5 is when they also ran out of gas. She is going to look into it more for me and let me know what might trigger it and what it actually means. Thanks.

I had the same issue on my first F10 M5, after about two hours of sitting, it started up perfectly fine (when Roadside showed up).

Had the same issue. Dealer said my fuel tank was low and it showed a misfire on one of the cylinders. I filled up and haven't had a problem since. Low fuel shouldn't cause this in my opinion.

Thanks guys. I always have fuel in the car. When it gets 3/4 low I fill up. While at home, I even go to the same gas station. So no air in the lines. It drove fine last night after washing it and even early this morning. It just happen out of the blue. SA also said by just starting the car and idle for about 5 minutes dont do squat. My wife said since she didn't drive it, she did go out there just to start it to keep the battery up. But now we all know that don't work to keep the battery charged up. I haven't spun out or anything or have any hills, so that one is out also. They called me around 6pm and said they will get on it first thing in the morning. I'm happy for that.

Well this confirms what the dealer told me abot charging . Thanks for looking this up.

I just got this issue on my car over the weekend for the 3rd time. I got stranded with two kids on the side of the road waiting for a flatbed. The dealer said it was misfiring of the cylinders or something like that. 9th time my car has been to the dealer for problems since October. I finally said screw it and sold the car on Monday. I am waiting for the RS7.

Good luck.

Did you sell it back to the dealer? How long is your wait for the Audi?

Wow, that doesn't sound good. Can you share with us the other problems you experienced. Rs7 is a nice car.

Damn dude. Sorry to hear about this. Makes me a little sad to know one of the original Sept 1st Euro Delivery M5's is now gone.

If you run the car dry, that will probably cause the high pressure fuel pump to burn out.
