Car won't downshift to 1st gear when you come to a complete stop?

Hey guys,

I recently noticed that my car will not always downshift into 1st gear as it is supposed to when you come to a complete stop. It seems to be very sporadic and I have noticed it in the efficiency mode and also in sport mode. I took it into the dealer last week and was told that this is a known problem and they would have to kick it up the ladder to see what they could find out. A week later and I still have not heard back. Have any of you guys experienced this? If so did you take to your dealer and was there ever a fix? Thanks in advance for your feedback!

Sometimes it needs to be Sports Throttle Mode or certainly the plus -

Gas savings
That's all

I probably wouldnt think much of it except I was turning onto a road on the other side of a blind hill and just as I was about to pull out a car came over hauling a$$ and I couldnt get out of the way quick enough. If I had first gear it wouldnt have been an issue, but dragging out of second (when I was at a complete stop) I barely made it. Not cool at all...

My M6 GC CP always starts in 1st, it's a pain as on inclines when the engine starts the gear is engaged with a thump!!
My M5 used to start in 2nd in comfort which was good.

Have the dealership reset the drivelogic history. Should fix it. Mine is always in 1st but I like it, and it used to be in 2nd until the software learns that you like to give it some gas off the line. It's a funky system but after a lot of data it should be cleared.

It's not always "supposed" to start in 1st. So your car is probably just fine. Depends on engine setting as mentioned above and a coupla other things. If I wanna go I click the left paddle to to be sure I'm in 1st. If in sport or + it will be in 1st IF u come to a complete stop. Doesn't downshift for California rolling stops though.

Just to clarify from the replies: you guys don't think when you come to a complete stop that your car is supposed to downshift to first gear? I am not talking about when you are close to stopping and then step on the gas again. I mean a complete stop count to 3 and then step on the gas.

Correct if in efficient mode, it is normal to start off in 2nd, based on 2 F10M5's

BarryB,

Did you see this happen in Sport mode as well by chance? Thank you for the feedback.

Head to you dealer and ask to speak to their best technician. This doesnt happen to me - it used to happen to me in one of my previous M3's (e46) but makes no sense to me and I disagree that this is standard on the F10 M5.
I can change down to 1st gear and pull off in first in any mode.

Normal behavior. This happens a lot specially in stop and go traffic.

Just an FYI: I have been told by the head of service that this is NOT normal and it is being kicked upstairs. The regional tech is supposed to be in next week and I'm going to be taking my car back to see if they can figure this out.

I previously had a 2010 750li and a 2013 650i xdrive and did not have anything like this ever happen with either of those models.

I will post updates on this as it plays out.

Thank you again for your feedback guys. It's appreciated...

Interesting. Your other 2 cars weren't DCT. Are you saying that it won't downshift to 1st at all or sometimes?

I think this may also be to do with your driving history since the transmission is adaptive. If it is used to harder acceleration it will start in first. If it is used to gentle then it will start in 2nd.

I find mine adapts each day. One day I'll be driving agressive and it goes to first. The next day im driving in traffic / easy on throttle and it stays in 2nd.
But I can then put it into sport or sport+ Or turn up the drivelogic and all is good and starts dropping to 1st again.

I like it personally.

It can always manually be put in first. If not, I agree something wrong. Otherwise I stand by my original position. It is normal. Seen in '13 and '15(30Jahre) m5's

And if you have been driving lazy and are not happy it is considering setting off in 2nd you tap lever to right into manual and it automatically goes into 1st. Tap it again and you are back into auto setting, v simple!

Also, the gearbox is v intelligent, so if you are driving the car like a tart it will think you want to set off in 2nd :-)

Update: Dropped the car off this AM and they admitted they are not sure what this is but their best guess is that it has something to do with the adaptive. I only purchased the car back in December so I don't know about the driving history before that time. They are really puzzled that it took about 4 months before it started to happen to me though. They are going to clear the adaptive history and run some more tests on it today. I will keep you guys updated with anything more I find out.

Again I appreciate everyone's feedback!
